duration: forever

Hi folks,

i am having notes have infinite duration, in a way - they go on through the composition and even after I close the file.  If I re-open the file, the note goes away.  Also goes away if the file's left open - I don't close it - but i restart Play.  At wit's end.  Help!

Eric

    hi eric,
this sounds like you're not getting a note OFF message to your synth.  what is the output of your MIDI track?  are you outputting to a keyboard or a softsynth?

I should also mention that it seems to happen in a couple of tracks only, out of a 16 track (all midi) composition.  And it happens, within those 2 tracks, to random notes.

ok - are you recording the MIDI data from the MO8 first?  then sending it back to the MO8 for playback?  and that's when you get the problem?

give us as many details as you can.

If the tracks have sustain pedal events (CC64) in them, make sure Zero Controllers When Play Stops is enabled in Preferences > Project > MIDI.

I create the events from my mo8.  They go to the PC (X1), where I edit, etc.  and X1 sends it back to mo8 on playback...thx very much

check your event list (I don't remember the shortcut to get there on X1 and I'm not at home).  see if you are removing the NOTE OFF during your editing somehow.

I've seen this before, in much older versions of Sonar (6.2.1?) but only when using the Pentagon synth.

    It never did get resolved.

Not resolved?  Ugh.  What did you do to get on with your work?  Different sequencer or synth?

Any ideas on where to go with this problem next, out there?

does this happen with softsynths or just with your MO8?

have you checked your MO8 manual to see if there's a problem with its settings?

    Hi there,

I'm a synth novice, but I did go through the manual.  Also, I tried deleting the track and re-recording it from scratch.  Same problem.  Now I am trying a whole new project.  The one I was working on was recording in a prior (SONAR 8?) version of Sonar.  I wonder if that's the problem....

    Thanks,

    Eric

There were references above about accidentally removing Note OFF events.  I don't believe that Note OFF events are ever visible (at least not in any midi editors I've seen).  The notes in the piano roll view, or in the Event List, have a start time and duration.  The actual midi that is sent for the note is a note ON (at the right time) and a note OFF (at the right time).
So I don't think there is an editing issue with note OFF events.

Eric said that the project had 16 tracks - presumably all going to the same synth.
Could the synth just be getting overloaded and missing events?
Is there a possibility of two or more tracks sending to the same midi channel and causing conflicts?
