About "extended view" with an NVidia graphic card

Hi,

seems like a computer question more Sonar X1 question but I haven't found an answer on other forums and it's a bit related with X1.

In XP, with a GeForce, I could have with 2 screens one desktop that has the resolution of screen 1 + screen 2 (I think it's called "Extended view" and the taskbar was on the 2 screens). I don't use this with Sonar 8.5.3 cause I prefered using "dual view" so I could maximize a windows in each screen. But now, with X1 and multidock, I think an extended view would be more appropriated.

Now, I use Windows 7 x64 and a GeForce 9800 GT and I only have the option of dual view. Is it possible to have this extended view or not ?

Thanks.

If I understand your question correctly, you'd like to spread Sonar over two monitors. Windows 7 lets you extend your desktop; however, each monitor will be unique and the Windows taskbar will only be displayed on one monitor. (The old extended mode is no longer available.) There is a workaround: If you run X1 in a windowed mode (not maximized), you can stretch the main Sonar window across your two monitors. The downside (not that it's a deal-breaker) is that you're not running in a full-screen mode, but you can come very close to a full-screen appearance.

Yes, that's what I actually do ;). So it seems as a limitation of 7.

Someone told me about NVtool, a software that can do the extended mode but I don't find it.

There are a lot of people upset about "span mode" working in XP but not in Win 7 (with same video card). I am unclear whether it is a drivers issue or the Operating System. I have heard the system linked below works with Win 7 but have not looked into it in detail.

It seems it works with ATI Catalyst. You can choose an "eyefinity" mode that is the same thing as "span mode". It's really hard to know if it's drivers or OS related cause it worked with XP and a NVidia card but it's possible to do this with an ATI card and Windows 7.

I have similar question... but just similar.

for now I use two monitors with ATI Radeon HD 4550 graphic card.
but few days ago I bought two little monitors.
Now what I want to do is to use all FOUR monitors:
    - main monitors for "main" X1 window/workflow
    - small monitors for analysators/plugin windows etc
What will be more cost-effective - try to add another graphic card, or maybe look for (not cheap) solutions like Matrox triple Head 2 go or "USB" graphic card, or maybe change my graphic card to 4-head Matrox or nVidia QuadroFX?

Phenom II x6 1100T (OC to 6x 4,1gHz), 8gB DDR3/1600gHz RAM, Win7/64; SONAR Producer X1c; Korgs: Z1, M50, Triton Rack, TRinity Rack; NI Maschine; Behringer BCF-R2000; MOTU 828mk3 FW; Edirol Edirol UA-1000; guitars: Cort Z-Custom, LAG JET100 totally customed, Cort SFX-DAO; some other music toys, one very musical cat

Adrian4u I would suggest you go to a Radeon forum to get more specific answers. I have seen a lot of remarks about people having issues getting 2 cards running under Win 7 and a handful that have said they were able to get it to work. For example if you read through the posts under the linked article below you will get an idea of what I mean.

After doing some research, it appears that the "spanning" mode has indeed been removed from Windows 7. However, nVidia does offer software called "nView" that will allow true monitor spanning. Unfortunately it will only work with one of their Quadro cards. The nView program is included with their drivers.

They removed it for new GeForce cause I have nView with XP and an old GeForce 4.
