Should notes in midi loops update when changed?

I'm using Home Studio 6XL.  Midi loops seem to be working fine, but I'm wondering about their behavior.  I noticed if I drag out a "groove clip" to loop some midi notes and then change some of the notes in the clip, the notes in the repeated sections do not change.  For example if I create a 1 bar riff and loop it, then change one of the notes from C to D, only the note I changed is actually different and in all the bars where the loop is repeated the note remains at C.  If I drag the groove clip back to 1 bar and then back out to loop the riff all the notes are updated.  Is there a way to avoid this and have all instances of the loop update when I make a change?
thanks,
Dan

that's a good question and I don't know the answer.  I know that if you copy and paste instead of using groove clips, that you can choose to "link" the clips and as long as they're linked then whatever you do to any of them does to the other ones linked to it.

Interesting question. So I just did some experimenting with this.
As near as I can tell, the groove clip loops are essentially images of the source loop.
The copy/paste method directly references the source loop(file), so when you edit any one iteration of the loop, you are able to directly edit the source and all linked loops (if link repetition is enabled).
Lets say pattern A is our loop, and we want it to run for 20 measures.
When you use the groove clips, you are painting pattern A as a linear track for 20 measures.
When you copy/paste, you are telling SHS to play pattern A in 20 places.
In this case, there is only 1 pattern A. The other 19 simply point back to it. Enabling Link and Link Repetitions establishes active communication.
I can see how either approach has distinct advantages, so knowing what you intend to do would dictate which method is best in a given situation.
I like questions like this, because I almost always learn something from them.

Thanks for the replies Beagle and Robert.  It looks like copying with "link to Original clips" checked does what I was looking for.  I tried enabling groove clip looping on the linked copy to see if I could get the best of both worlds, but unfortunately that breaks the link.

Yeah, it's a completely different behavior.
But at least if you know what it is going to do, you know how you want to approach it.
