Everybody Loves My Honey

Hey,

I'm looking for some feedback on a new song I recorded called Everybody Loves My Honey.

I'm pretty happy with the balance of all the elements in the mix.

I'm frustrated in that it sounds good on my studio monitors, but when compared to commercial CD's in my car it sounds kinda dull.  In this latest mix attempt, I dropped down the lower mids (in the 200-250hz range) of the entire mix using the LP Multiband Compressor and it seems better.

Anyway, please let me know if you like it or hate it or if anything glaring jumps out at you.

Many thanks in advance!

Hi Dave, nice song, that harmonica is a nice touch. Nice hook too. Guitar could sparkle a bit more, as is it's competing with the vocals and gets buried in the mix.

It is a nice little song however it sounds very dry and little bit all too stereo if you get my drift.

    Thanks for sharing.

Hi Rik.  Thanks for your comments.  I'm guessing you're refering to the acoustic guitars?  You think they could use a little boost in the high freqs?  Thanks.

Hi Wookiee.  Thanks for taking a moment to give it a listen.

I'm not sure what you mean by "all too stereo".  Do you feel the panning is too wide?

    Thanks.

Hi Dave, thats basically what I mean every thing feels spread across the sound stage it would not hurt to set things in specific areas of the stage.  If you are using Producer channel tools is a great tool for creating the sense that space and position.

    hi dave,
very good guitar sound.  mix is very dry sounding - especially on your vox.  harmonica adds a cool element.

Nice tune.... it reminded me a bit of the writing the Mavericks used to do.

The song was a bit dry, but it did sound pretty good.... nice & clean...

I would have added a heavier bass, and some harmonies....

Nice.... whoa... the ending was not good. too sharp on the cutoff.

Thanks for everyone's comments.  I sometimes feel like I work in a bubble, so some outside input is most welcome!

I'm going to re-visit the mix over the weekend and do some tweaking and apply some of your suggestions.

    Thanks, again!

I would double track the vocal tag line "Everbody loves my honey". Also the "She loves me" repeats at the end. I would probably work on some ambiance. Especially on the snare. I'm hearing a vibrato guitar that isn't there. I would also make you make another pass on the lyrics. There are places where you are really trying to get the lyric sung in time, those places are where you should rephrase the line using less words.

The mix is good. The arrangement and song are good. I personally would retrack the acoustic adding more distance from the mics, it sounds like it was recorded a little close. I would have liked to hear a delay or reverb fading off at the end with that abrupt stop. Those would be my changes.

    Gear: A bunch of stuff.
