Is it any good, 2nd song ..

Hi there,

Just started out with the Aebersold's Play-A-Longs, and editing in Sonar X1.
This is my second mix.
How can I improve?

Piano, drums and bass: audio from Aebersolds Play-A-Long , transposed 2 steps
Voice: Sonitus Equalizer, VX64_Vocalstrip, Sonitus Reverb
Master: Pro Channel Compression.

I love this tune and you can find a version I did I my SoundClick page.

You got a great voice.  I can't really comment on the background so I will focus on the vocals.

It sounds a bit compressed, maybe its the VC-64.  I used to use that on all my vocal tracks but I've taken to not using it at all and I like the results better.  But that can depend on your room and your mic.

Do you have a room treated with foam?  If not, spend the few hundred bucks to do it up right because the difference in what you hear through the mic is amazing.

    What mic are you using?

You have an excellent voice!  This is not an easy tune either.

I've been striving to use less reverb on my vocal tracks, but this one sounds like it might benefit from just a touch of reverb as it sounds a little dry against the lush background.

Very cool, although I listening right now on some crap speakers, so the over all puch is hard for me to dertermine.

I'm glad to see some of this kind of music on the forum as it's often under represented.

    I like it.

    Hi Daryl,

thanx for the compliments! and what a usefull comment.
I only have some rockwool behind my microphone. I was thinking of making a kind of booth by hanging thick curtains around. Foam might be bit expensive right now.
My mic is a Rode NT1-A.
I will play with the VX_64 and reverb once more and post it here.

I can't seem to find your version of Misty on your pages though. But how cool would it be if you could mix in a guitar solo in this song? :)

You're right I cleaned a bunch of stuff off my site and Mist must have been one of those.  Send me an email and I will send it to you.

Keep plugging away.  And yes getting QUALITY foam on your walls and ceiling will make a major difference.  I was really surprised.
