Create envelopes on VSTi tracks?

argh. ive tried to do this for 2+ hours now and im frustrated.
i USED to be able (in 8.5) to draw/create envelopes on a midi track routed to a VST or VSTi, it seem that in X1b now i cant. this is a simple right click in previous versions, now i cant even find it at all.
consulting the help file was NO help.
 
my method (which is the old way of doing it) is to insert a synth onto an audio track, pick a midi track, and then select the Synth from the output of the MIDI track. then once i had this, i could make envelopes and plot along those envelopes and route it to any parameter i wanted. it seems that is no longer.
what am i doing wrong?
any help appreciated.

    I do it the same way, but I always insert the envelope into the audio track, rather than the MIDI track.

    Select the audio track that contains the soft synth and expand it (widen it vertically).  Look under the track name window and you will see a drop-down titled "Clips."  This is your Edit Filter, and once you get used to it, you will love it.  Drop that menu down and hover your cursor over "Aurtomation."  Selct the type of envelope you want to add and you are in business.  From here on, it works just as it did in earlier Sonars.

    With the added bonus that it's impossible to mess with any data in the clip while you're fiddling around with envelopes, also the new implementation only allows you to work on 1 envelope at a time, which used to be a problem if you had multiple, overlapping envelopes - selecting the right one to edit was a REAL pita.

    Some users have complained that it's a drawback not being able to view multiple envelopes, but I believe in X1 they appear as ghosted lines?

    +1 on putting the envelopes into the AUDIO tracks.

    When you Bounce to Track, all the enveloping will be reflected in the exported wave. 

    When you Freeze the Synth, the envelope will remain and it should still work perfectly.
