Re:no price limit -the best out there for a 16 in sound "card" for Sonar?

Although the sound of the Orpheus is great, the drivers are not the best unfortunately... Do you know this from personal experience? I'm saving my nickels and dimes and home to someday be a snob and have an Orpheus. But if the drivers are dodgy, then I'm not interested. I'm hoping to get a unit to demo at some point.

I have one in my home studio. It works reasonably well when used in DAWs but I would expect it to be better than reasonable for the price. And in Windows (websites, media players etc) it sometimes gets "desynced". The audio starts buzzing and crackling and sounds wrong until you turn the unit off and back on. I don't know what is causing this but on a unit this price it isn't really acceptable. Another negative for me is that the routing options are quite limited. The inputs/outputs drivers are IMO badly named. (You have to rename the individual driver I/O's in Windows because all inputs and outputs have the same name). If I had to get new converters for my home studio, with what I know now, I would probably look at a different solution. That said, unfortunately it sounds too good for me to get rid of. So the bottom line: Sounds amazing but the drivers and control software are not the best. UnderTow

I attended a Sound On Sound seminar where the big shot/owner of Prism (I forget his name.. Richard?) demo'd the Orpheus on a Lenovo laptop. I asked him afterwards why not Mac and he said he finds PC 100% reliable. He even gave me his card in case I ever bought one and had technical questions... Maybe you should get hold of him, Undertow.

I would suggest the RME or a MOTU product and invest the $10000 in a great mic and pre-amps.

I upgraded to an RME Fireface UFX a few months back with high expectations that have not been met, particularly with driver stability with Sonar. This is ironic given the main reason I went with the UFX was RME's reputation for driver stability. (I had a Mackie Onyx 400f which had terrible driver support previously.) I've had issues since Day 1 with firewire drivers. Their latest beta USB driver is working better for me though. Ironically, I had fewer issues with the Mackie driver, despite it being unsupported for Win 7 x64. Some stability issues may have been caused by X1 and X1a, but minor issues remain with X1b patched to build 246. Given RME's reputation for driver stability, I'm sure they'll work out the kinks eventually and I'll be happy. But until then......

Zo anybody tried the ssl nucleus ...just to know ? no, but I'm sure intrigued (not that it's currently in my price range or anything) - from the looks of it and the feature set, it comes pretty close to my 'ideal' surface/monitor setup (whether one uses the interface or not - but the pres are a nice touch regardless)
