Jim Roseberry has been a big advocate of this unit.  he has some RTL specs listed in some of the threads in the Hardware forum.  I'll see if I can dig them up if he doesn't chime in.

I don't specifically remember hearing that the latest drivers did away with the 64 sample buffer option, but I do remember Jim saying that their latest drivers did put back into their drivers the "built in safety buffer" which they had previously taken out.

I'd PM Jim about it or post this in the hardware forum where he frequents.  I don't see him up here very often, but he's in the hardware and computer forums all the time.

I looked at the FTU8R myself when I needed to replace my Delta 44 and talked with Jim and others in the hardware forum about that unit and the MOTU Ultralite MKIII Hybrid.  I ended up getting the hybrid simply because of the "hybrid" option and I'm glad I did because on my system the unit works better on firewire than it does on USB - maybe because I have a lot of USB devices.

in your case I certainly would be considering the FTU8R then!

Hey Mike, ol pal.  I had the FTU for awhile but I kept getting BSODs referencing it and many "hangs" on closing Sonar projects.  And, indeed, the last drivers I had did take away the 64 sample option.  Jim swears by his unit (hence why I got mine in the first place) so it was probably just an anomaly with my system...tho I am running one of Jim's fine creations;-)  In any case, since switching to a Focusrite Pro 24 DSP my BSODs have disappeared as well as most all "hangs" on exiting a project.  I do still get "The Teleport Server has stopped resonding"...but that is almost always caused by a certain plugin.  YMMV.

PS:  And my latency actually improved:-)

I have had nothing but problems with the FTU in Win 64.  Updated drivers worked for a while, but installation of SampleTank trashed it.  I did a recovery to before the SampleTank install, but the crashes came back.  Now, I leave the FTU turned off, no crashes or shut downs, and turn it on after windows is up. It seems to like that just fine.  Go figure. A little apprehensive about an ST reinstall though.
I'm assuming that it is something about the way Windows is managing USB power, but I haven't dug deep into that yet.

Thanks Beagle. I think I heard the latest drivers may have done away with the 64 sample buffer option. I was wondering if that was resolved or how to best run a the FTU on your Win 7 x64 laptop. I have a run of the mill graphics card in my laptop. I need to replace my firewire MOTU Traveler with something ideal for my laptop.

    Hi Mike,

I had good luck with the FTU8R.
That said, the latest driver has done away with High Performance mode.
So you no longer have access to the 64-sample ASIO buffer size... or the same 5.5ms round-trip latency (44.1k)

High Performance mode caused a problem under some configurations (particularly laptops with higher end video cards).
Instead of educating end users, Avid chose to "dumb down" the driver (to avoid the problem).
    A major step backward...

If you have the budget, look at the RME Babyface.

    Hi Ol Pal,

I get those messages too (when exiting Sonar).
Small BitBridge issue with Waves or IK Multimedia
Doesn't affect performance/stability or saving projects... so I just close it and move on.

    Are the preamps bypassed?

    Hi Mike,

If you use the TRS balanced connections, the preamps are completely bypassed.
If you use XLR, the preamps are not bypassed.
The 896HD is one of the few (relatively affordable) units that has a switch to bypass the preamps.
(MOTU did away with the switch on the 896mkIII)

With the Babyface can you use phantom power on one input or do you have to use it both on or both off?

    Thanks,
