BUMP FOR X2: attempting to get up to speed on x1, having a terrible time with it...
I've been using Sonar since 3, and progressed through all versions except 7 and 8.5. I'm trying to get up to speed on x1, and having a hell of a time doing so. Setting aside for the moment my complete frustration in re-learning a tool I've been using for 7 years... I haz questions: is there a way to have more than 2 fx sends visible at all times in the console view? is there a compact send view (CV) as in prior versions? is there a way to make the font in the fx bins smaller so I can actually tell what plugin is where while using narrow strip mode in the console view? are there known issues with quick fix build 246 hosing installs of x1b? I just installed it and it seems to have corrupted my x1b install (xp 32 bit). (program appears to launch OK, but crashes when loading any project. Also crashes when loading in safe mode, and when trying to create a new project) What tips do you have to make the program more small-screen friendly? I've got everything as tight as I can seem to get it, and for my purposes (live recordings of up to 28 inputs), it's borderline unusable on my laptop (max screen res of 1280x800). TIA

Hit the 'C' key will disappear the Control bar. 'I' and 'B' will get rid of the Inspector and Browser. There's a compact mode for the Pro Channel as well but overall X1 doesn't play so nice with smaller screens. TIA

Thanks. I was afraid of that. I picked up X1 in the buy 8.5 promo, so I'm d/l'ing 8.5 and putting that on the laptop, will see if that works any better for me, and maybe reserve x1 for the studio machine. Any other workflow tips? Prior versions of Sonar fit like a glove to my workflow; it feels like I'm working in a completely alien environment now.

It's a big change that's for sure. I don't use the Console View really so I don't got any tips for you, but yeah the smallness is a pain. Keep an eye out for the skin editor that should be coming out soon, that might help some of this pain. I got a new GPU and displays when I got X1 which solved all the "bigness" probz, but yeah on a laptop? Ugh.

Try using screen sets. You can set up the screen the way you want it for a particular task and save it in a screenset for easy recall. This way you don't have to move screens around and constantly resize them. I would also recommend the X1 tutorial vids at groove3.com Great vids and it will get you up to speed with X1 quickly.

Yeah, I've been playing with them, but they really don't address the inefficient use of vertical space issue at all. Have begun watching the groove3 vids as well. Fingers crossed for the forthcoming skinability. That sounds like it's got the best chance of working. As it stands now, for my particular laptop purposes, x1 may prove itself unusable. Which is a shame.

benstat's Sonar Plus program will allow you to get rid of the top title bar for a true full screen experience. But X1 is really made to take advantage of big HD screens.

It was crashing both on previously working saved sessions and on the normal template. I reinstalled to x1b, and that fixed it. I'll hold off on any further updates, as this appears to be stable.

The more I play around with x1, the more I'm coming to the conclusion it's unusable on my current sytem. to give a little more background of what I'm doing, this is how a typical project looks in 8.5, and it works quite well for me: this is the same project opened in x1b, with the module settings as close to 8.5 as I could get them. As you can tell, there's a lot of info off-screen that I use fairly frequently: trim, automation read/ write enable, two fx sends, one fx bin entry, EQ plots, dB meter values, interleave and phase controls. When I get to the mixing stage in a project, I'm almost entirely working in console view, so these omissions are a big deal. I'd love to be able to display as much info in x1 as I can in 8.5, I could even do without the toolbars visible in the above 8.5 screenshot. Max resolution on this screen is 1280 x 800, unfortunately. The vertical issue is the big deal breaker for me, but the loss of critical info in the narrow strip mode would also be a deal breaker. Even on a very wide screen, I'd still need to use it for most projects I do, and the loss of critical icons in narrow strip mode are too sorely missed. There are things I would really like to use, such as the pro channel, so here's to hoping skins will come/ work. For the time being I am an unhappy camper with a saggy diaper that leaks. I'll send this on to the bakers as well. Thanks to everyone that chimed in.

Quick bump for X2: any improvements on these issues? As it turned out, X1 was totally unsuitable for my purposes, and I ended up never using it, in spite of having paid for it. (Well, having purchased a license for 8.5 because of the free upgrade to X1). I just saw that X2 has come out, and some of the new features look attractive enough for me to pony up the $99 upgrade price if it'll be usable with my system. I'm still on a limited screen-real-estate laptop, but have moved to Pro Tools / Reaper for that system for mobile use. I've got a new desktop system for mixing / non-mobile use with better screen real estate. So, some questions, if you don't mind: 1) what is the minimum vertical resolution I can use in the console view that will make it so I do not have to scroll vertically? 2) are more than 2 sends now able to be visible constantly? 3) are more than 3 inserts able to be visible in the fx bins? 4) can some of the 'lost icons' in narrow strip mode be brought back in narrow? (interleave, phase, automation, etc) Thanks

Now that X2 has the ability to host vst plugins directly in the Pro Channel, you'll find the Fx bin is now totally redundant, so you can hide that. X2 also has a full screen mode which does exactly what it says. I like to do a lot of work in Console View, and I like to treat the Inspector as one giant right click option - float it in the middle of your screen and you have access to every single parameter and it always reflects the currently selected track.

Ref the sends. I came up with a screenset that was initally a workround but I use it all the time now and unless CW come up with a system to see 24 sends or more at once I'll probably stick with it even if they do increase the visible numbers. Video showing what I mean and how to set it up HERE I should also add that it works even better now since autozoom was introduced as there's no need to change all track heights at the initial stage. Also any added tracks now automatically follow the autozoom height so it's even dynamic to track additions. HTH
