The Sunday Report...X1 eerily stable...too stable...pookie scared!!
Could be because I'm mixing and tweaking today on my vanity project and then puttin mixes up on Soundcloud as references. ( www.soundcloud.com/doghouse-riley ) But with the exception of about three "The Teleport Server has stopped responding" and only then on closing a project I've had no hangs or ghosts in the machine. I bet most folks troubles are when they are actually "recording". So here's today's Sunday Report question: Are most of your problems cropping up when recording or playing back? Oh yea, how's your Momma and them?? Tell em Doghouse says Hey! And happy holiday to all you Muthas out there. You know who you are. Rock on, chillun.

As much as I don't love X1, I'm still going to ask - Don't you get tired, Yoropal, of constantly dreaming up new ways to express your non-stop discontent--? Just askin'. Randy B.

Yea, it's definitely true that one man's ceiling is another man's floor. I'm actually looking for GOOD THINGS about ol X1...hence today's "Sunday Report". And there are many. The smart tool is yummy, for instance. I don't think you understand what I'm after Randy, ol pal. I'm doin my damndest to "call em as I see em"...being as impartial as I can be...and understanding I can only speak to my own system and workflow. And, here's the most important thing, as a non-apologetic lover of all things Cakewalk. I'm gonna go with my ol pal mudgel on this one:-)

Well, Yorolpal, you're right that I don't understand what you're after, and I doubt if I'm alone in that. From your posts, I can only honestly report that your supposed "impartiality" comes across as the thinnest of veneers intended to hide your detestation for X1. --We're supposed to be hanging with bated breath on your Sunday Reports as if we're supposed to be vicariously enthralled like subscribers to a soap opera digest? "Will he finally conquer the program or not??!!! Stay tuned!!!" I really don't understand why you keep torturing yourself with trying to make X1 be something you don't have to constantly post negatively about - You have a perfectly good program, 8.5, still there and waiting for you to get your game on with. It would be a relief if you'd just go back to what works, and quit the passive aggressive posts which try to sound folksy and good-natured but which clearly show how much you want to make other people share your pain. No personal slams intended. Just sayin.' Randy B.

Had an awesome all day session by myself Saturday making my first hard trance, electro type track. It came out awesome and was quite smooth. I don't think X1 crashed at all. I don't remember a crash happening so there you have it. That being, said I do get crashes SOMETIMES, but I use a LOT of softsynths and plugins that are third party, some of them known to be "not so stable". I deal with those crashes because I love the plugs, and I freeze the tracks pretty quickly when I know they are prone to crash. Most of my plugs are rock solid though.

No personal slams intended. Just sayin.' Randy B. At the risk of continuing to sound folksy and good natured I've got to say that, some of my more hyperbolic comments to the contrary, I'm not torturing myself by trying to ferret out X1...anymore than I still torture myself trying to figure out much of 8.5. I'm actually a fairly banal user of Sonar. I continue to find out how much I don't know about even basic operations of these complex programs because I; just don't use all the available options, never do read the manual as I should...instead relying on the good folks here to help when I need it and am just a lazy sum**** to begin with. That said I do find X1 more non-intuitive than 8.5. So what? That's my tough luck. Hence, I'm trying to learn X1 and, indeed, have completely shifted over to it (and, yes, am determined to learn it) as I know that it is the future of Sonar. And, so far, I'm a loyal Sonar user and have been for probably longer than you. And you are absolutely correct that my "Sunday Reports" have a snarky edge to them...all for that "folksy, good-natured" spirit that I do not deny trying to inculcate here on the forum. But I DO NOT detest X1. It is simply another challenge I must overcome. There's a big difference. One which, apparently, I haven't made clear enough for you to understand. For that I'm sorry. But then, of course, you wish that I would just "quit the passive agressive posts...which clearly show how much you (I) want to make other people share your (my) pain". So I will try to respond in a manner that is no way "passive agressive" Randy, ol pal. Flake off, touch hole! Of course, I say that with love. (Who forces you to read my inane ramblings anyway...show some intestinal fortitude, will ya? Just look away when you see one of my posts. Count to ten. Take a deep breath. Move on. Hell, block me if you must. I understand completely.)

I rarely have problems during recording, most problems are during mixing when I start using Melodyne Editor. That said there's always something screwing up in X1, or just not working the way one would think it should mostly minor things at this point but enough and often enough to raise one's blood pressure at times. Tonight it's the interleave button going bonkers. Dan

Hi Ol Pal, I get the occasional "Teleport Server" error when closing Sonar. It's a benign issue (doesn't affect stability/performance/saving)... so I'm not all that worried about it. Ultimately, when all plugins are available as 64Bit dlls, this issue will be moot. Otherwise, X1 is running well here... Sonar stability problems often involve particular 3rd party plugins. I use a very small collection of what I consider "quality" plugins. This limits plugin related problems... (fewer variables generally equates to fewer problems) I'm not saying to avoid 3rd party plugins... but using thoroughly tested (proven) options helps bullet-proof your DAW. Over time, I've learned my methods/likes/preferences in plugins... and that's helped distill my collection. Compressors: - LA-2A (smooth/slow)
- 1176 (fast/aggressive)
- SSL (great for drum subgroups)
EQs: - SSL Channel (5-band parametric EQ with high/low pass filters - extremely versatile)
- Pultec (simple passive EQ - great for bringing out specific low/mid/high detail)
Intonation correction/adjustment: - Melodyne (makes reining-in intonation as easy as percentage quantizing MIDI)
Delay/Modulation: Haven't completely settled on my favorite delay/modulation plugin. - PSP 84 (excellent delay/modulation EFX - from simple to down right crazy)
- Timeless 2 (excellent delay/modulation EFX - not crazy about the GUI but great sounds)
Reverb: - Lexicon PCM (the real deal in an algorithmic reverb plugin)
- Convolution Reverb (using my 480L IRs)
Peak-Limiter: - Peak-Limiter (from TRacks 3 - IMO it's more transparent and more soft/analog sounding than the Waves L series)
AmpSims: - Ampeg SVX (I love that aggressive Ampeg bass sound - this is as close as you'll get with a plugin)
- Amplitube 3.5 (One of the better overall AmpSim plugins)
- Shred/Headcase (More authentic tube amp feel - still a work-in-progress)
- Guitar Rig 4 (Not the most authentic of AmpSims but extremely flexible routing/EFX/processing)
I have somewhat the same approach toward soft-synths. I'd rather have fewer/better options than 101 mediocre virtual instruments. Soft Sampler: - Kontakt 4 (For running advanced sample libraries Kontakt is without peer)
General Purpose Synth: - Omnisphere (The genius sound design of Eric Persing - enough said)
B3: - VB3 (It's an aging 32Bit plugin from an independent developer - but listen to the sound/feel)
Acoustic Piano: - Ivory-II (Founder was one of the lead sound designers at Kurzweil - as good as it currently gets)
- True Pianos (The "Gold Jazz" sounds pretty decent in context - especially considering the light load)
Note that there are many other great sounding plugins. The above list works well for me...

I've had a curious stability journey lately. Over the past few weeks I've been doing a series of conference videos. I've got about 96 hours of material I need to get through. I receive an omf and quicktime video from the video editor and I load them up into X1. Each conference lecture is between 30 min to an hour and a half. My workflow has been the same all throughout: I load the omf, I import the video and I add sugar. No recording involved. The first few sessions I was crashing quite a bit. I had even tried only using Sonar bundled plugs to try to narrow things down, but it was still crashing. But then after a while things settled down and I've been running for a week with no crashes at all--I mean literally a week. I haven't shut down Sonar or the computer in that time. When did the latest quickfix come out? Maybe that solved whatever problem I was having. But lately, Sonar's been really stable. Hopefully my saying that doesn't put the whammy on it.

Yup Jim, ol pal, I've got most all the plugs you mention and totally agree about the "Teleport" thingy. It's no biggie. Plus I too did not like the GUI of the Fabfilter plugs...at first...but now I'm a huge fan. I think it's because I finally "got it" AND their stuff is just so danged good! You really need to check out their new Pro-G Gate (just released this morning...there's a video tutorial on You Tube). It shall be mine tonight! Oh yea, "The Centurion" is still runnin like a finely tuned Ferrari...thanks for your good work! Really my only real problems with X1 now (other than the out-of-left-field stuff which still occasionally happens) is just learning the dang thing. I actually like it quite a bit the more I learn it.

Yoropal, perhaps Randy and other's surprise at your singing "Everything's alright" from Jesus Christ Superstar is the tone you took when X1 came out. Although still funny (at times), the implication was that something wasn't only wrong w/ X1 (and there was plenty) but those users who appreciated X1. I didn't start using it primarily until the b revision came since there is a learning curve (I considered it new software) and the hiccups that always come using and the code of new software. So, to continue the extended biblical metaphor, your conversion on the road to Damascus came as a surprise. There is plenty left for the bakers to cook, but X1 has been stable for me (on a 32-bit system, for sure, but if it ain't broke ...). I've found some nice ways to workflow X1, esp. with the revisions to the key commands, and the track view plus docking suffices for most of my time. I'm glad you are figuring a way to make X1 work for you and it is stable. I do have faith Cake will continue to improve the stablity and give us back some of the complexity and configurability of SONAr 8.5. You've always had good ideas for Cake - now keep 'em coming. @
