Can't record anymore
Hi everybody. I am very frustrated, I'm sorry to say. I'll try to be as clear as possible. And I need help. Last year, in August, my dear Cakewalk stopped working after I got a new computer, with Win 7. After many email conversations with a nice lady (Kelly Brennan) at customer service, I got the new version and it worked properly until last week. I did nothing to change it but it doesn't record anymore. Curiously, I got several updates from Windows a couple of days before. Any relation? Since then, I tried many options: re-install Cakewalk, check connections, soundcard settings. No changes. What happens: it seems the needle of the turntable works because it catches all «movement» the arm makes before reaching the record. The second it touches it, there's no recording. Now, I saw there is many updates here to download. Would it help me? I did the most recent one. It made an error, that I skipped. No changes. I am very fed up. Making CDs out of 33-45-78 rpm is a hobby and it became quite a troublesome adventure. I think of simply buying a new kit (turntable + program, like Ion) and get rid of Cakewalk. Despite my negative comments, I like Cakewalk because it's easy and does the minimum I need. Other programs need to be used through iTunes, and I am not interested... I've nobody around me here to help me. I'm on my own, hahaha! Can anyone help me?

Hi Ravel, we'll need a little more info. I'm assuming you're using a USB turntable for this conversion? and you probably are using your onboard soundcard for playback? look here: OPTIONS>AUDIO and tell me what is listed for the RECORDING and PLAYBACK devices?

Yes, an AudioTechnica USB turntable. Yes, I am using my onboard soundcard for playback. Audio - Options says: Playback device: headphones (high definition audio) **** this seems new since the Windows update Recording device: stereo 1 microphone high definition Bit depth : 16 (very pale) 64-bit (not marked) Sample rate: 44100 Driver mode: MME 32 bit I played with that window many times. The problem was there the 1st time. Thanks for your answer.

Updates are sometimes very problematic. On my DAW with MC on it, I am totally unconnected to the net. It NEVER updates and I don't have problems with it..... my thought is, if it isn't broke...don't try to fix it. I would do a restore to a date before the update ( you should see the updates for the W7 updates) and see of that solves the issue. If it does, simply refuse the updates.

Ravel - change your options in OPTIONS>AUDIO to: PLAYBACK = HIGH DEFINITION AUDIO STEREO 1/2 (or something similar - the main output instead of the headphone output) RECORDING = USB AUDIO CODEC (or something similar there) if you don't have options like those, tell us what options you DO have in the pull down menus for those parameters.

I tried, not working. When computer is not plugged on turntable, USB audio codec doesn't appear. Other info: Playback = Headphones Recording = Left Microphone high def audio Right Microphone high def audio Pitching ideas: I have a feeling something happened with the Windows updates. Something weird too: I can record my voice with Cakewalk when its opened. Like if the computer micro (at the top of my screen, with the camera) took over. And I never used that! Everything I wrote the 1st time is still true. I wonder if the simple fact of having the downloaded version of Cakewalk makes a difference? And what about the multiple updates that are proposed here? I'm no computer wizard here. Maybe I should by the Cakewalk program (in the box) and start anew. Or another cny. Or another turntable and othe program. Thanks for yr help. Ravel

I don't think the download versus boxed version has anything to do with your problem, so don't spend more money trying that. There has been a slew of people in the last few weeks with similar problems (can't record, select inputs, etc.). With no evidence to support it, I think it's Internet Explorer 9.

Agree with Greg.... the box version won't change anything.

Look Beagle gave you the answer, but lets take it an inch further. In order to record you need to use the proper input. That must be the USB codex for the turn table. If you have the mike input selected it is looking at the sound card for input not the USB port. In order for the program to see the USB port it has to be plugged in BEFORE cakewalk is started up. That way it open with the USB port showing and then you make sure it is selected. Now if you want to record something from the mike input select that. If you tuen off MC5 and the un plug the turntable, then if you open MC5 again it will now NOT see the USB port. You have to plug it in each time. In order to understand these things you have to always think routing 1. where the signal will come from, and where it will go to, and patch that route together internally. The record and playback timing devices are just like virtual patch cords. I hope this helps.

Yes, Robomusic, I plug before starting Cakewalk. Thank you EVERYBODY for all your ideas and advices. However, tried everything, it still doesn't work. Too bad. I'll have to find another solution. Like a used little portable PC with Win2000 and the Cakewalk start-up CD. It worked for many years that way. thanks again !

I would not count out the possibility that the turntable/pickup is broken. If the total silence starts the second the stylus touches the record, it could be the stem of the needle is broken (???) Where do yo hear that the needle catches the movements of the arm? Does the turntable have an amp and loudspeakers? If you hear those arm movement sounds through SONAR it's clear that it's the turntable that is broken. Those USB-turntables are so unbelievably cheap that they can't be very well built. A good stylus cartridge alone used to pay twice as much as the whole USB-turntable today.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Again, thanks everybody. Bought today another turntable that uses the Audacity program... SAME problemsssssssss. Ha! So, as I guess it is my 1 ½ yr-old computer that has a sound card problem (what the F ... can it be?) I'll try the new turntable at a friend's house soon. Thankfully, I can bring back the new turntable and have my money back if... (I guess I simply wanted to put an update here... But I do wish I had somebody near me to help me. Sigh.)
