audio problem

Help I am trying to record from electric acoustic guitar, 1/4 inch ts jack from guitar usb end into laptop,  my sound card is a realtek high definition audio card driver version 6.0.1. 5904. When I plug in i get choices in recording
C - media usb audio device and the realtek audio card. In the speakers setting I get again c-media usb audio device and the realtek speakers. If i select the usb for the speakers I hear nothing so i use the normal realtek speaker, the problem is the software  records when I play guitar but when I play it back it is not clear at all just rythmical noise. Any help would be appreciated, I just got this software, do I need any extra hardware or what. My laptop is an Acer aspire 5732z. Thanks

Are both audio devices set to the same sample rate?

    Diggs,

I would recommend getting something like a Line 6 UX2 or something similar.

I'll just throw in that I love Line 6 UX2.  I've had no problems with it for the year+ I've had it and Pod Farm 2 (which comes with it) is great fun

Hi Pete, thanks for the suggestion...getting to grips with this forum stuff now. Another  bit of advice needed now, apart from the price would the line6 ux1 be ok to use instead of the ux2, I have read the spec on both and if there are any differences I wouldn't know....This is all new to me. Hey Wookie, oh yes set to the same, set to everything and every which way, I even got the microwave hooked up...no joy. So I bought a regular jack lead and put it into the mic slot , it worked just crackly...15 minutes later cannot record using that now. Metronome sounds well tho.

UX1 and UX2 are essentially the same thing just the UX1 has half the inputs.  So if you are recording solo and don't plan on recording in stereo with 2 mics then UX1 is more than enough.

I understand it sucks having to drop more money on hardware when you thought you had everything you need.  It might be possible to get stuff to work with what you have... I'm not 100% sure.  If you did manage to get what you have to work, the latency is probably going to be horrible.  What I mean by that is the time you hit a note there will be probably about a half second delay before you hear it through the monitors.  Getting an audio interface with ASIO drivers (such as UX1 or UX2 but there are many more) will eliminate that latency.  Some people don't mind recording with that latency but I just can't handle it.

I haven't used Abelton Live that came with it, without looking at it I can almost guarantee you have a better program with GTP4.  I forget the track limit on GTP4 (I upgraded to Sonar eventually) but it is higher than 8 tracks.  If you are a guitarist then you'll really like POD Farm.  Basically it does the same thing as Guitar Rig does that came with GTP4 but you'll have more options with the UX since GTP4 came with a LE edition of Guitar Rig.  I also like the layout of Pod Farm better as the effects and everything is laid out like a pedal chain.  It is easier for my brain to follow that.  Personally I think the Pod Farm bundle makes the price worth it alone, I use it all the time.  Some people like other stuff better but it has always fit my needs nicely.

Since you are just jumping into this, I'll let you in on some nice plugins that you can get for free as well.  There is a thread around here somewhere with a big list, but go to Native Instrument's website.  There you can download a bunch of free plugins from their virtual instruments collections Kore 2, Kontakt, etc.  They literally have about 100 different products and these free packs are some sounds taken from each one.  There are no restrictions on the free packs and I think I had fun with those for about 6 months before I went ahead and bought a couple of their products.

I hope all this helps.  I think if you bought an external audio interface your recording experience will be much better and you'll be able to concentrate more on recording rather than fighting with your machine.

when i boutght sonar i thought i was all set to go..untill i started researching..unfortunetly..i should have researched first..(this was years ago)
i spent every dim i had on pro audio 9 by cakewalk.
i then get it home..tryed recording and the latency was awful..my soundcard on my computer was junk..i mean it was okay for listening to mp3's or something..or just audio files..but not to record in real time..neddless to say 200 more dollars later i was ready and well worth it..trust me once your set up right..you will never realise why you didnt do this sooner.cant believe i used analog as long as i did..but i do still love my reel 2 reels.
i guess what im saying is..always research before you get in to something..dont make the same mistake i did.l

Ok mateys thank you all for the advice, I am now the owner of a ux2, authorised it, registered it, fed the monkey, downloaded and updated it all, now all I have to do is to figure out how to use it, so before I start to ask some stupid questions I will have a nosey about and see if someone else has asked them first. So brace yourselves.
