One of them is the popup blocking capability. You no longer have to see all those frustrating popup windows since the browser will take cake of them. It's built in and works better than many of the programs that can block ads in IE, and better, it doesn't give you even more ads and popups like some of those programs do.

The latest version of Firefox runs fine on Windows XP, whereas any version of IE later than v6 does not.  Go figure!

I'm reading/responding to this post on an office machine that's running WinXP with IE 8.

Firefox is a smidge faster... and more secure.  Firefox allows more user configuration/customization.
Firefox more closely adheres to actual/defined web standards.  That's one thing that can be annoying about IE.
Try both and use the one you prefer.

I'll admit I hate IE (probably mostly due to IE6).  I think Firefox or Google Chrome is way better, but I will also admit that IE has gotten much better over the years.  It really is more about personal preference, unless you are a IE6 user.... that is just a very bad browser and I don't understand why people still use it.

I just updated to Firefox 4, never could stand the look of IE, back to preferences, and security uses. Firefox lets you customize with ease, really like the personas, gives it a personal feel. When not playing music spend a lot of time online. I think I read Chrome may be a bit faster, but I'm Firefox all the way. Just my 2 cents.

Maybe it works ok on some systems, but whenever I have upgraded IE it has always resulted in problems and crashes and I have always ended up reverting back to v6.

I use Chrome and FireFox. Both are great and also have the option to run plug ins for additional features. Very customizable and in my experience faster than Internet Explorer.

My old XP system's IE8 had gotten so incredibly slow over the years, I decided to try Firefox a few weeks ago, and Whoa Nelly!  Fast indeed, and a lot of nice add-ons.  The AdBlock Plus add-on is keeping not only popups from appearing but also virtually all of those embedded, blinking, "[your town here] mom discovers Acai Berry health secret!" sort of ads that litter the layout of the actual webpage you're reading.  Meanwhile, in IE8, you'll have dozens of those ads all around the perimeter of the page, and the inevitable delay while they all load.  Blechhh.

The one downside with FF, for me at the moment, is that the awesome "Download This Video With RealPlayer" feature [of RealPlayer] doesn't work with Firefox 4, so if you're in the habit of using that method to save all those priceless Youtube clips and whatnot to your hard drive for keeps, you'll have to find another way. (...or open up IE for that)...

But overall, I'm pretty darn happy with FF.  Not sure why I didn't try it sooner.

I've used only Firefox for the better part of a decade. I can hardly imagine life with only IE. Never really liked Chrome that much and Google kinda scares me in "Big Brother/Minority Report" way.

I will say though, on my XP machines, Firefox is very slow when I first crank it up for a few minutes. Afterward it's fine.

ever since AOL bought and destroyed Netscape, I've only ever used IE (yeah, I know that's exactly what M$ wanted).  I've never had any problems with IE.  I tried FF once and yes it was faster than IE, but there were things about it that bugged me the way the drop down menus worked and some other little "annoyances."

so I am happily browsing away with IE9.

oh - I did have a problem with IE9x64bit version.  it doesn't display websites correctly so I stopped using it and went back to IE9x86

you should have an eye on the resources-monitor with either browser on..
then you'll see how much more efficient Firefox is on the cpu, especially on older systems!
Had to tweak an old laptop and the cpu usage with IE was at 100% and lock the system for quite some time! (not with google.com, but with a site that had a lot of scripts going on)
Firefox would also peak for a blink of an eye to 100%, but then immediately free the resources.
On modern pcs it doesn't really matter which one to choose, but Firefox is sometimes a bit more compatible with websites - I use both. When IE is messing around I switch to Firefox.

If you want control over your browser, use Firefox, if you want be be restrained by rules, use anything else offered at this point in time.

I use FF on my surf computers. I even use it with my U3 jump drive. No complaints, seems much lighter than IE.

Apparently the virus writers are now aware of the popularity of FF and it is starting to attract unwanted attention that way. Still way ahead of IE though IMO. Opera gets the best overall marks for security but I never gravitated towards it.
