Help out a total noob!! Soft synth question
Hey guys, just got Sonar 8.5, second hand, but alas... I've been having a little bit of a problem trying to use more then one soft synth at a time... I have the Garritan orchestra, and I love the sounds on that, but it doesn;t have some stuff, like voices, and I really like some of the patches on the Roalnd TTS1 as well... So What I want to do is to use both garritan and TTS1 at the same time, it basically works, but my problem is that, let's say I have about 4 tracks going to the garitan synth, and I add the TTS-1 synth, right? the sound from the TTS-1 will play together with one of the channels of the garritan, so lets say I have: Piano on Channel 1 of the garritan One MIDI track assigned to play thru that to that channel Then I add the TTS-1 on channel 1 I have an organ Create a MIDI track assinged to the TTS-1 When I play the TTS-1 MIDI track I get a mix of the piano and the organ. What I have tried... Tried to use different channels on the different synths, so, if I have a piano on channel 1 on the garritan, I would start using the TTS-1 on channel 2 > Same result Tried using different MIDI channels for the synths themselves, but it appears anything not on OMNI or Channel 1 doesn;t play at all. Try adding all soft synths at the very start of the project, same thing.... I know it's gotta be something stupid I'm missing, but I just can;t figure this out.... PS> Now that I'm typing this out, it only seems to happen when I have several tracks already loaded, let's say 5 or 6, on the garritan and then try to add tracks for the TTS; I don;t think it happens when I just have one of each? I's have to quantify that, but I think so, if it helps diagnose the problem.... Thanks dudes!

Hey guys, just got Sonar 8.5, second hand Welcome to the Sonar Forum. Unfortunately, whoever sold it to you, sold it illegally. The Sonar license is non-transferable. Purchase a legal version and you will be eligible for upgrades and you will get a warmer reception in this forum.

The problem is that both synths are responding to the same MIDI channel. Are you setting the output channel on each MIDI track? On each MIDI track you've got two pertinent dropdown lists: "O", which tells SONAR which instrument to send the MIDI to, and "CH", which tells it which channel to use. That's how you send MIDI data to more than one synthesizer. Of course, each synth also needs to know which MIDI channel to respond to, but you've already figured that one out. In your example, change the piano track to channel 2 and then tell GPO to listen on channel 2. Leave the organ as is.

If you are talking about jamming live on your keyboard to hear these sounds, and you do not want all of them to sound at once...there is a button called "input echo" Its in your track view to the right of your M S and record buttons. The icon image is impossible to explain, Ill leave it at that. When you midi keyboard, midi guitar, midi drums, midi alligator etc.. , you will hear whatever synth tracks have the input echo activated, you can activate them all and hear them all together when you play, or just hit your piano by itself to hear it solo while you play. If you do not mean this, than ignore my post. Good luck with Sonar and hopefully you will find yourself a legit copy of the software.

Pay no attention to the second hand software rule... I find it a bit much. Someone walks into a store and buys something that is none returnable and doesn't like it so they re sell it to a second party, big harry deal. Win Win for all involved. The guy who didn't like it took a smaller loss so is happy enough. The guy who buys it gets a proper version ( not pirated) The software company has a new patron who will end up paying full retail for the next version. ( unless the software does not meet the clients expectations)

To JohnnyV: I disagree. The person who sold it profited illegally. The person who bought it bought an illegal version that cannot be upgraded. Cakewalk lost a legitimate sale. I have a LOT of money invested in Sonar and if enough people steal it, they could go out of business hurting my investment and the investments of everyone else who purchased it legally. Think about that the next time you so cavalierly support an illegal act. You and the OP are now blocked. I don't support people who steal software or support the act.

I agree with you in principle, Dave, but you're overreacting. For all we know the OP will become a happy SONAR evangelist who will tell others how great it is and eventually buy many legitimate copies over the coming years, to the ultimate benefit of the company and the user community alike. Or, he will never buy a legit copy because he's an unscrupulous thief - in which case it hardly constitutes a "lost sale" because such a person never intended to buy it and never will. Either way, it's not worth raising one's blood pressure over.

daveny5 To JohnnyV: You and the OP are now blocked. I don't support people who steal software or support the act. How many other things are advertised as for SALE that are, in fact, only offered for RENT. Sonar should not be using the words BUY, PURCHASE, OWN, or anything that purports that you are actually tacking possession of ANYTHING of any redeeming value. To do so is deceitful and an excellent example of buyer/beware. On the site it has a nifty button saying, "Buy Now" when, in fact, it should say, "Rent Now." I believe your righteousness is misplaced over what is really a misunderstanding perpetrated by Cakewalk. It is reasonable that if you are done using their software that you are allowed to either return it to them for some sort of refund or sell it to someone else. As long as the registrations number is only being used by one person it is not piracy no one is injured except you, an owner, not getting the forced sale of one more item. You may be on the legal side but you are not on that high morale road you pretend to be. John

I think it would be good to have some sort of a transfer system for registrations. Not so that you can sell the previous version every time you buy an upgrade, but giving up your CW registrations would give someone the right to adopt them for a moderate price. You can't give or sell your driving license to someone, the program license is the same thing, so I accept the system as such. I agree to some extent, though, that there is a semantic problem. It's not renting either, because the license is yours for good once you pay for it once. I wouldn't be overly sensitive about this kind of cases, but torrent downloading and such is clearly stealing IMO. I've been paying to CW about 15 years (before that the CW Apprentiss was free :o). If I get unable to continue my hobby, I wouldn't consider myself a criminal if my son or nephew continues to do music on my PC. Let's be reasonable.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Hmmm missed the kind of rude reply there. Were do I say that I'm using a second hand copy? We all try and live an honest life. When you have no money this becomes more difficult. We tend to bend the rules just to survive. Different cultures seem to have different levels of how much the rules are broken. Just take a simple thing like driving a car, did you stop at the stop line? No big harry deal, just reality. I'm lucky and I can afford a few toys, not many, but enough to keep me honest and out of trouble. After all it's a given here that a good hunk of first posters will have pirated the software, it comes with the territory. I try and read between the lines and if I believe a poster is a pirate then I simply move on. They are easy to spot if you read enough posts. Seems we have scared the OP away anyhow and I'm glad Bit flipper answered his question.

I agree there's no need to get your blood pressure up over a copy of second hand software. and I have no intention of getting mad about any of this. but I do have a strong opinion about it. Johnny; bending the rules to survive really does not appliy here. you don't need sonar to survive, so that's a ridiculous statement. if you were talking about food or water for your family I might think a little bending of the rules might apply to your statement. recording software is not a necessity of life, I'm afraid. the problem with selling/buying sonar 2nd hand is because of the way that cakewalk chooses to do their licensing and upgrades. since cake sends a full version of sonar for upgrade price (except in the case of 8.5) then when you sell the previous version you're cheating cakewalk out of the difffernce between what you paid for the upgrade and the full price of the current version you have. to further explain, take for example if I bought sonar 7PE at full price from GC. then I registered online and when sonar 8 came out I paid for the upgrade price of sonar 8PE which is significantly less than buying the full version for the first time. now I turn around and sell my boxed version of 7PE because I don't need it to keep S8PE running since cakewalk sends out full versions instead of "upgrade" versions. this scenerio means I've cheated cake out of a couple of hundred bucks. will they go bankrupt because of it? no. but in my opinion it's all about integrity. Integrity is very high in my book of traits when dealing with others. if you AGREED that you would not sell, trade or give the software to anyone else, then you should have the cajones to do what you said you'd do. if you don't then I find it distasteful and would not want to do business with you nor would I want to offer you help. again - I'm not mad about this, and I won't get my blood pressure up over a couple of people in the forum whom I'll never meet in person saying they have 2nd hand software. but I do lose respect for those who admittedly have knowingly "bent the rules" regardless of their financial situation since it's more about their lack of integrigy than it is about a couple of hundred bucks.

I'de like to share my first Cakewalk experience for perspective sakes. My buddy gave me my first computer with Cakewalk 2.0 on it, as well as some other programs (windows XP etc)...it was my first computer and I was happy to have it. I had no idea how to use Cakewalk and used it as a 4 track on my computer. (I also had no idea how to use a computer at the time) He was going to throw the computer away because he bought a new one. Once I realized that my 4 year old free computer was not going to last long I upgraded...I then purchased my own copy of Sonar 7 which I have been upgrading since then. Do I feel like I "stole" Windows XP from microsoft because my free 2nd hand computer came with it?..no...I also don't feel I "stole" anything from Cakewalk even though it was technically second hand. Afterall, my buddy did not instal the program on multiple computers..it was one purchase and one user..had he not given me the computer I would probably be using Pro Tools currently. I also had no idea that the program did not automatically come with Windows at the time. I also do not feel my integrity suffered because I accepted the free computer with Windows and Cakewalk on it (I think it also had MS Word installed which I also did not know how to use). In the end, both Microsoft and Windows have gained a new customer because since my "2nd hand" versions I have purchased full versions and upgraded. I just want to point this scenerio out to show that unless you know the situation the other person is in, you should probably reserve judging too harshly. I mean, the guy did not come here and say "HeY dUdEs I jSut DownloaDeD This From a TorInt HoW do I uzE it???" As Kalle stated, if she stopped recording and her son started using her computer to record, would her son be considered to have a lapse in his integrity or would they be criminals? no, that is silly.

I"m not going to continue rehashing my opinion over and over. I just wanted to add that I agree, Mike that there are situations which might not be an intentional misuse of the EULA in the case like you're describing. My harshness of saying someone lacks integrity is reserved for people who install the software themselves, click the checkbox(es) to say they agree to the EULA (whether they actually read it or not) and then decide that the EULA doesn't apply to them or that they don't agree with it even though they have already agreed by installing the software. Once you install the software and have to check the boxes saying you agree to the terms - then you are responsible for following that agreement, IMO.
