you'll be fine with the 1080. one of my monitors is 1680x1050 and personally I think it's better than my other monitor which is 1920x1080! the color depth on that particular lower res monitor is much better - but it cost a lot more than the 1080 one did as well!

I run Sonar on a system with a dual 23" 1920x1200, a system with a single 20" 1920x1050, and a system with a single 15" 1440x900. I think the 1050 is a bit too small, the 900 way too small, and the 1200 is more than enough. I'd expect that the 1080 would be fine, fitting nicely in that spot between "a bit too small" and "more than enough".

Thanks guys... for some reason I was thinking that that the 1200 was the only one that would fit everything on the screen... but I have a couple of other 19" flat screens that are not being used. So I could run a dual monitor setup as long as the monitors don't have to match reslution. I've never run two monitors so I don't know if I can mix and match. I may try to run a 24" 1080 along with my Laptop screen until I get a dedicated desktop. Then I will probably get matching 24" screens. I should be in "hog heaven" with one 24" considering... Thanks, I just didn't want to make a mistake. You guys are really helpful and I appreciate it. Julien

I've never run two monitors so I don't know if I can mix and match. How could I forget my other system with a 23" 1920x1200 and a 19" 1280x1024? So yeah, you can mix and match without problems. For the curious, that system is the one where the 19" monitor is run from a VGA splitter along with other monitors in the recording rooms so I can show the talent stuff on the screen.

In my opinion, it would be fine. BUT I recommend getting as much resolution as possible for your budget.

matching monitors is always going to be "best" but like I eluded to above, I have 2 mismatched monitors. I used to run a 22" 1680x1050 and a 19" 1280x1024 (4:3) and it was good, but not great. then I bought a 24" 1920x1080 and shelved the 19" and I really like what I'm using now. it would be better if they were matched and even better if they were matched to the better color depth and contrast that the smaller one has, but this is a good setup. I can put my control bar, console view and browser on the right monitor along with X-rayed plugins and synths and track view on the left and I'm a happy camper!

One consideration that may or may not apply to you... I bought a 23" monitor but the shelf behind the V-Studio console placed it too far away for easy vision--and I had failed to check for VESA connections (screw holes) on the back. I took it back to Best Buy, got an LG with VESA connections, and then bought a monitor extension arm to clamp to the shelf. Now the monitor comes up really close for tracking and editing, but moves back out of the way for mixing so I don't get any speaker splash or blockage. This was a big deal for me.

That's interesting - I don't think I've seen an LCD without VESA since the earliest LCD days a few years ago!

I was also surprised, but shopping at BestBuy and Frye's (another big DFW retailer), I found that about 1/3 did not--including the Dell I originally bought. Now I know to look.

...for me 1200 vertical resolution is far and away worth the investment. 1080 is just ok - again IMO.

I'm using 1920x1080HD, and I'd say if possible go for larger. 1080 vertical resolution is acceptable enough, but the horizontal will need to be bigger if you want to get all the control bar modules visible at the same time (you probably don't). I have space constraints - if I didn't. I'd use two monitors. Basically, the bigger the better. Going on stuff said on here in the past the devs seem to have been using much larger displays, for what that's worth.
Sonar Platinum 64bit, Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit, I7 3770K Ivybridge, 16GB Ram, Gigabyte Z77-D3H m/board, ATI 7750 graphics+ 1GB RAM, 2xIntel 520 series 220GB SSDs, 1 TB Samsung F3 + 1 TB WD HDDs, Seasonic fanless 460W psu, RME Fireface UFX, Focusrite Octopre. Assorted real synths, guitars, mandolins, diatonic accordions, percussion, fx and other stuff.

I was told I should have bought a 1200 (I have a Dell 23" 1920x1080. The 1200 gives you more real estate, but I'm used to my 1080 (it is digital and looks great) I just have my screens setup long ways. works for me. But I am only a home studio retired musician EDIT:after reding the rest of the the threads-The monitors don't have to match each other, do they? I can run 2 monitors easily-maybe I should get a 1200 to add to mine (if I can?)

I don't think I've ever had matching monitors, but I very much enjoy having 2 large ones!

OK-I can get another Dell 23" fairly cheap, so I think I'll look into that Thanks
