Changing note durations for EZdrummer
I'm using HS7XL and EZdrummer. I've been trying to adjust the note duration of a sequence I created for EZdrummer using Sonar's step sequencer. I've tried it using the staff view and piano roll but neither work. I've tried deleting the notes in the step sequencer and drawing them in in the piano roll view and adjusting them that way but the duration doesn't change. Can anyone tell me how to do this or if it's even possible?

what do you mean that "neither work" for changing the note durations in the staff and PRV? what were you donig and what didn't work? you can change the note durations in either of those views. are you trying to change all notes or one note or just a few? in PRV (easiest, IMO); one note: use the pencil tool (click on the pencil icon) and hover over the end of the note you want to change until the cursor becomes a line with an arrow then click and drag the length. alternate method: right click on it and in the window that pops up change the duration in musical time. several notes or all notes: highlight the notes you want (if you want all then highlight them all, easily done by leff clicking on the whole track) lasso if you want to change only some. now follow the same directions above for hovering the mouse cursor over a note (any of the highlighted notes will do) and click and drag. all highlighted notes will change the same amount. alternate methods: highlight the notes you want to change (see above) and then right click anywhere not directly on a note in the PRV or Staff view. choose LENGTH change the length parameters to what you want. another alternate: in the TRACK VIEW, highlight the track (for ALL notes to be changed in a clip) right click choose INSERT EFFECT>MIDI EFFECTS>CAKEWALK FX>MIDI FILTER change the DURATION note: the MIDI FILTER can be applied to clips or the entire track. to apply it to the entire track, put it in the FX bin of the track instead of right clicking on the clip.

I use staff view almost exclusively. To change the duration of a midi note.... Simply right click the note. A NOTE PROPERTIES window opens and one of the options in it is duration. If the note is less then a quarter note, it will not have a 1:xxx in front of it. To make it longer if it is... for example..... .350 click the number to highlight it and type in the new duration you want such as 2.350 to make it longer then a half note. I use this all the time to shorten and lengthen notes that I played on the keyboard to the correct length.

I'm trying to change a series of crash cymbals. In the PRV, I tried it with the pencil tools as you suggested but that didn't work. I even tried erasing it so I could draw it back in manually but it won't let me erase it either. In the staff view, I right click the note, change the duration then click ok but it doesn't change it. When I right click the note again it shows the same duration it was at before I changed it. I even deleted the note(s) in the step sequencer and drew them in manually in the PRV which did allow me to shorten the duration. However, it only shortened it visually, the actual length of the cymbal crash never changed. It won't allow me to do anything else you suggested. I played around with another sequence I created using a Cakewalk plugin and everything worked fine so I'm wondering if this isn't an issue with Ezdrummer itself. Or could it be an issue with the step sequencer? Any ideas? Should I contact tech support for both Cakewalk and Toontrack?

no, it's not an issue with EZD, I use it and EZD doesn't have anything to do with the notes in the PRV or Staff view except that you can drag the loops from EZD onto the track you're viewing. once they're on the track they have nothing to do with EZD. the track outputs to it but is in now way controlling the duration or any other parameter of the notes. you said initially you start out in the step sequencer - are you still trying to use the step sequencer or are you actually looking at the MIDI notes in the PRV?

EZD is a drum sample player, a drum (or cymbal) sample plays with a "Note On" message but does not respond to a "Note Off" in the way a standard sample (say piano) does. so changing the length of the note will make no difference to the sound you get from your cymbal. What you're trying to do from your description is called muting. I don't know if EZD can do it, but other progs like BFD2 have notes assigned to each of the cymbals that will mute them when played. The alternative (if EZD won't mute) would be to output the cymbal track on its own and automate the volume.

"you said initially you start out in the step sequencer - are you still trying to use the step sequencer or are you actually looking at the MIDI notes in the PRV?" I was trying to make the adjustment in the PRV. Is there a way to do it in the step sequencer? To Karyn: You're right I'm trying to mute the cymbals. I was gonna adjust the volume in the mix to achieve this as a last resort but was hoping to have all the parameters set before I bounced it. Either way, I appreciate all the help you and Beagle have provided.

If you don't want the hassle of creating volume automations for the cymbal mutes there is a little trick you can use... The Hi Hat channel in drum machines (samplers) is designed so that the closed HH sound cuts off the open HH sound, just as real hats would. Assign a cymbal sound to the open HH, play it then send a quiet hit as closed HH. The cymbal is muted. First task is to check for cymbal mutes in EZD though. That is the correct way to work.
