Can't pan and volume control Kontakt from within Sonar 8.5

Hi,

My pan/volume controls work fine within Sonar 8.5 using built in intruments like Dimension Pro, but using the Kontakt plug in for Garritan Jazz and Big Band, as well as the regular Kontakt library samples has proven very confusing.

When using those plug ins, I can pan/volume from within Kontakts plug in interface, but not from the track in Sonar. I don't see anything in Kontakt that can be set to make it different, unless I'm missing it. I remember having this problem two years ago with Kontakt and gave up, and am about to again.

Is anyone else able to pan and volume Kontakt successfully from the Sonar interface?

Thanks.

Do you mean pan and volume in the MIDI track or in the Audio track?

I set each instrument in an instance of Kontakt to a seperate output and control the pan, volume etc. on its audio output track in Sonar and it works fine. I have never felt the need to contol pan and volume via the midi track so I can't say if that works or not.

I have no idea what happens in the simple instrument track scenario, I have never had the need or inclination to use one.

I've never had a problem with, or had to do anything special for panning Kontakt in a MIDI track. But if you're using stereo outputs out of Kontakt, you'll get better results using the Channel Tools plugin on the audio track for panning.

Thanks.. Yeah, I meant pan and volume in the MIDI track.

Do you only use ONE instance of Kontakt and load mulitple instruments in there? On my last install on my other computer I couldn't get that setup going, but now I can, except for the controller info not responding in Sonar. I'll check the Kontakt Global settings again and let you all know.

Ok, thanks, this may be a good workaround. Never used the Channel Tools plug in as never had the need, but will look into that, which I assume is a part of Sonar and not an external plug in.

Yes, I load it in Sonar with all synth outputs and using Kontakts mixer to route the audio for each instrument to the appropriate Sonar track. Setting the volume and pan in the audio track is my prefered way of working, I don't consider it a work around. I no longer use the midi volume and pad for any VSTi - It makes sense to me to control volume and pan along with EQ and any thing in the FX bins and buss routing all in the same place.

That'll definitely help me as I didn't have "All Synth Outs" chosen, so all the audio was going to one track. Now I'll be able to pan and volume from Sonar on the Kontakt audio track, although I still will investigate why I can't do that from the MIDI track when others can. Gotta be something to do with controller response settings in Kontakt.
    Thank you.

See if the problem is specific to JABB or if it affects Kontakt's bundled libraries as well. That will tell you if it's some setting within Kontakt or a limitation/quirk/feature of that specific library.

Channel Tools is a bundled plugin. It lets you pan each side of a stereo track independently, allowing you to move the image of a stereo voice while preserving its "stereo-ness". Conventional panning merely alters the relative levels of the left and right channels (like the balance control on a hifi), which is the correct way to do a mono track but not a stereo track. If you want to pan a stereo track all the way left, for example, you'd simply lose the right channel altogether.
