Yup, they even have one of these in LawnGuyLand, NY

Philz and I went into the Big Boy room and played acoustic guitars for about 45 minutes.

Neither of had the dosh to lay down for our favorite guitars.

BTW, my second favorite was actually a $429 Taylor. My first favorite was a Taylor 114CE. It had electronics (which I see as useless). When I get home I want to see if my local shop has one that I can take home and record to verify I want one. There was a $2499 Taylor that I did not like. And I played a few Martins and was generally not that impressed. I'll let Phil weigh in on his favorites.

Yeah, I was rather partial to the 114CE, myself.  It had a nice balance of brightness, fullness and percussiveness.  Oh, and it had a nice neck too.  I think that old Gibson L50 may be finding its way onto eBay, where it may be joined by my 70-something Guild S90.

I have 3 taylors and 2 martins.  I love the taylors.  I have a 900 series (forget the number) with the tree of life inlay coming down the fingerboard. I have a rock maple sided 12 string and I have a 600 series strung up nashville style.  I almost never touch the martins nowadays.

Ed, Phil, in my experience, it seems there's never been a super pricey guitar that I've ever played that I felt was truly worth it. I've had the best luck with middle of the road guitars that for the most part, have not exceeded $2200. I have a nice collection of old Gibson's and Fender's that are probably worth good coin, but when I bought them 100 yrs ago they didn't cost as much as they'd be worth now.

But even the pricey stuff I've tried lately just doesn't make me say "hmmm this really plays and sounds like it's worth 4k or 6k". I just could never get over that. Most of the guitars I own have always been in the $800-$2000 range with my most expensive electric at $2200. I've never been a fan of the Martin's either to be honest. On most of the one's I've tried, they sounded better than they played. I have an old Ibanez that I bought years ago here that plays and sounds like it it would have cost $4000. It's just one of those freaks of nature that has all the right stuff. Plays like a dream and sounds incredible mic'd up either mono or with an X/Y stereo mic rig. Acoustic guitars are funny animals. Sometimes super cheapos deliver the goods.

I remember when I was recording my last album....we had a music store right next door to the studio. Like literally in the same plaza connected to the studio. I could just walk in there and take whatever I needed. They had an awesome array of acoustic guitars in a climate controlled room. I tried about 50 guitars for this one tune we were working on....I kid you not. Nothing was giving me the sound I was looking for. My drummer walks in with a guitar case. I asked him what it was for and he says "I figured I'd noodle around on this new little guitar my girl bought me while I was waiting to cut my parts". He pulls out a nice little Washburn.

I didn't think anything about it at the time. I went to catch a smoke and he was in the lounge playing it and I was like..."dude, gimme that thing....it sounds pretty good...brilliant sounding...like, full with perfect top end." I played it and it not only sounded great, it felt incredible so we went with it using an AKG X/Y stereo mic rig and it sounded so good, we just did one take of it. Here, you can check out the tune if you want.

I wrote it about the World Trade Center and a few political views. The Washburn is all through the song except for the lead guitar solo and the finger picking acoustic which follows the solo. That was my Ovation Custom Legend I wanted to use because it just sounded a bit warmer for those intimate parts. Check it out...proof sometimes those cheaper guitars are the way to go. :)

Brother Danny, thanks for dropping in.  Great tune ya' got there... really liked it, and those acoustics sounded great.

Ed & I played a whole mess of acoustics (funny story... will tell you the next time we talk), and both of us felt the $900. Taylor played and sounded as good as the $2000+ jobbies.  Neither of us thought much of the Martins, and the Gibson acoustics... fuhgetaboudit, which breaks my heart as I had many an old Gibson acoustic that I loved.

I'm even thinking that I'm gonna sell my 1946 L50 and buy that $900. Taylor.

    Personally I've always liked Martins.

But my take has always been once you get to (decent) all solid wood construction, most of what you're paying additional for is just cosmetic.

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

Are Guild acoustics anything like they used to be?  I got to play a couple belonging to other people a long time back - I think they were late 70s or early 80s production - that were very, very nice.  I've wanted one ever since... but I've heard that Guild isn't their own company any more.

Danny  that is a great tune !.....and I think the Washburn sounds really good. I had a similar experience playing my younger brothers Washburn at a jam the other night. It just fit really well for the occasion...........Very nicely done !   I have an old Ovation 12 string that I've strung as a 6 string for years at a time, It does the same thing recording wise -  it just works at the oddest times for finger picking and solo work.

+1 on both Danny's tune and the Washburn, both sounded great!  I've only owned one acoustic (an Ovation).  It wasn't bad and I really liked the neck, but I was too busy trying to find "THE" electric to spend time wading through acoustics (and I knew it would take a LOT of time).

Of course, there really isn't only one electric that is "THE" guitar for me, so I'm sure it's the same with acoustics!  I'll leave that research for another day...

The guitar player in my church band has at least a dozen Taylors, including one of their limited editions that was $14k (he's rich, if you haven't figured that out yet). It's a gorgeous guitar with a beautiful tone. There's no way it's worth $14k though. Not even close. The 100-series Taylors don't have all of the fancy bindings and inlays and have HPL back and sides if I remember correctly, but they do sound great. That's what I was going to get except my friend with all of the Taylors sold me one of his higher end ones for the same price as the 114e.

My next purchase is probably going to be an Epiphone Masterbilt acoustic. I played one at a Guitar Center and loved it. It's got a very different tone than the Taylor so I think it would be good 2nd acoustic.

Just recently went through the same...... Looking for a decent acoustic. I tried many of the Taylors, Martins, etc... and wasn't impressed that much. Tried a number of others such as Epiphones, Yamahas, Ovations, etc ...  mostly terrible.
Finally found a brand I wasn't familiar with but really loved the sound and playability.  The price tag was the kicker, though.  Not sure if you get these in the States, but they are definitely worth looking into ( Norman Guitars ).
