It's seems like a very sophisticated step-sequencer... pretty cool.

It's more than an advanced step-sequencer. It's a pretty full on DAW but in a very different way :)

I use Renoise all the time, I'm still getting into X1 but I don't think I'll ever get rid of Renoise.

not really "new" mod trackers have been around for years 20 or so I guess ?.. the demo scene from amiga / pc / st used them for years.

I made my first tune on an amiga with octamed.. later things on pc came out like scream tracker / fast tracker 2.

you can get some that fit inside a sequencer as a vst-i , so you get best of both worlds.

you can't "vs" them.. . same with things like quantising etc... it's comparing apples and oranges..

sure you can make music on both though.

It is a bit like Fruity Loops but turned 90 degrees. Personally I prefer the FL concept. It is more akin to something like a TR808 where you just switch on the notes you want to hear etc while it loops.

I have been approached by a one on one student to learn FL. I have bought the program and now in the process of learning and using it right now. I must say it is very interesting and a very cool way to make music. It has got the best of both worlds with a PRV as well as normal audio tracks. Some pretty cool instruments come with it too. (It has also got a gapless audio engine)

But thanks djjhart for bringing it to our attention. It is always very interesting to look another DAW especially one that is quite different to what we are used to. It must as a result make music that we would not normally create too as mattox82 points out.

I think it is great to have more than one DAW especially if the second one is so different like Renoise or FL Studio.

amiga had gapless audio for mods , you basically can punch notes in on the fly... comparing renoise to FL .. from what I  know of trackers (I used them for maybe 5-6 years).. I wouldn't compare either at all..

it's a different way to work on audio and if you know what your  doing, faster than using the "pro" equipment... 2 amiga's were far cheaper than buying an akai sampler back in the day... here's a prime example from the 90's

    http://www.youtube.com/wa...E8&feature=related

    and the finished tune

    http://www.youtube.com/wa...K8&feature=related

whatever folk use to make a tune ,is a means to an end.. I've seen the elitist arguments and snobbery over the years and thankfully more are open minded to use things with other things they should e.g. fx for guitars used on everything BUT guitars. etc etc

I am honestly shocked that out of all the people in this thread (including a "music technology" writer) only one of them knows what a tracker is.

I know what a tracker is and I know what mod files are... I grew up with the Atari and Amiga computers. It just didn't dawn on me when I took a quick look at that web page. Trackers aren't exactly mainstream any more, although it's nice to see they're still alive and kicking.

mainstream in commercial music production perhaps... but other things sure

    for  a number of reasons...

1 BIG one being with games,  why run 2 audio engines (e.g.  one for the music + sfx one) when doing a game when you can just use a mod tracker and insert SFX on the fly. Major companies use it.

another of course being file sizes..

I can seeing them being around for a long time yet.

They are still used heavily by the IDM/EDM/GLITCH/INDUSTRIAL/NOISE music scene. I've not ventured back into that territory for years, but I might have a nose at this for use with some bits n bobs :D
