The question is do you really want or need the grief?

    Plagiarism?

I reckon there's as good a case as any.  Something about the bass run over the main riff that just seems too co-incidental to me.

They sound like a Stone Roses tribute band to me as well.

It does sound like it...that's the thing though as well...can they afford going after it?

As it is there is a definite feel of tribute going on...

If you need me to represent you, clear it with The Bouy first. I've no idea where my travel funds stand at the moment.

It sounds, to me, like both bands listened to a lot of George Harrison at one point.

I'm not saying that this is true... but that I am left with that impression upon listening to either cut.

    :-)

I'd be curious to learn how early and example of that melody one could find if they looked hard enough.

    Anyways...

    I enjoyed listening to both.

    best regards,
    mike

Well..Gallagher's former band Oasis have been slated in the past for being Beatles (and Mott the Hoople..and Slade)  plagiarists Personally I don't own any Beatles or Harrison records, but it is a fairly generic riff.

I'm not being serious about this btw, I was just amused when I heard 'Millionaire' coming out of the radio. Considering sales of our CD can be counted on the fingers of one hand, I very much doubt if Liam owns a copy.

    Hi James,

It occurs to me that the similarity suggests that you might have an opportunity to get some tag along publicity for your work.

You might find ways to publicly ask the question in such a way that it inspires curiosity about your work and that may lead to sales.

The fact that your version predates the new version may make it a safe venture.

I haven't thought of the detailed ramifications but it seems like you could simply bring the subject up as a question and create interest and buzz about your stuff.

It could end up being a positive spin for both you and the Beady Eye guys... you could both end up on a BBC interview claiming that you both came up with it yourselves and find it interesting that it is so similar... or something like that.

    :-)

    all the best,
    mike

That's what the lawters want to see.

Reminds me of an original song one of our guitarists brought to the band. He claimed to have written it but the melody and all the chord changes were exactly like Spirit's "I've Got A Line On You". Even the name of the song was similar, "Shine A Light On Music".
He said he'd never heard the Spirit song but I don't know how anyone who turned on a radio in the 1970s could have never heard it.

Quick phone call to The Sun asking the same question would be in order I reckon. Worst case scenario - a bit of free publicity and a few cd sales for both - everyone's a winner ! ;)

Thats great idea - James could upload the SMB version to YT and we could all go on there and make comments referring to the "original" and even direct listeners/watchers to it. 94000+ hits so far, so a fair chance of some free SMB publicity. :)
