Inserting a pause using SONAR X1
Hello, I am using SONAR X1 Essential to record / edit MIDI tracks. I am new to X1, having used a much earlier (and simpler!) version of Cakewalk some years ago. How do I insert a pause into the score? Basically I just want to make SONAR pause for a moment during playback. Thanks!

im sure theres an easier way but heres what i do..i select all tracks in the t.v. i use the slice function on the smart tool and cut where i want the pause..i then switch over to the move tool i grad and drag all the selected clips over to make the silence spot. dont forget to engage auto snap to the desired cliplenth..(measure,1/4,,1/2,,3/4.)

When you say pause, do you want to restart at the push of a button, or pause in the same place for the same duration always? MIDI/Audio? I don't think you can literally invoke a transport "Pause" at a specified time for a specified duration. Perhaps insert a "rest" (like split all the clips and move the right sides rightward) and perhaps an all-notes-off if there is any midi. Or, this may be a little funky, reduce the tempo to near zero for a short span and simultaneously automate the master out to -inf.

Basically I just want to make SONAR pause for a moment during playback. You can have Sonar Tacet/Rest (blank space) for x number of beats/bars... but you can't actually make the transport pause and then restart (other than manually pausing and restarting playback)

Set your anti-virus software to start a scan at the time you want the pause.

Thanks for the suggestions. For me, the problem with simply splitting the clips and shifting to the right is that (obviously) you end up with the bar lines in SONAR offset from the bar lines in the score. So I have opted to use kelsoz "funky" suggestion of reducing the tempo really low for a beat or so. This does the job for me. Thanks again!

I'd do this: 1 - Ctrl + a to select all your tracks 2 - Put your now time cursor on the point you want the pause 3 - Split ALL tracks at that point 4 - Insert however many blank measures or parts of measures to generate the pasue you want You could get a little funky here and play around with the time signature/tempo of JUST the pause to get your midi notes lined up properly. Obviously if you insert a whole measure or a multiple, you won't need to even think about this.

Hi, Cbeebie - Actually, Kelsoz's solution isn't at all funky. You want your measure divisions to still line up the way they should with your music, so adjusting the tempo is the musically correct thing to do. Zooming the tempo down in the tempo view is exactly what happens when a conductor is leading a band/orchesetra. You're creating a Fermata that way. You'd never want to artificially just move clips over to provide the temporary hold. Randy B.

Randy B, You seem like a cool guy. Just wanted to say, though, that your picture is scary.

konradh Randy B, You seem like a cool guy. Just wanted to say, though, that your picture is scary. hehe-- Yes, this picture of an ancient Mickey marionette of mine came out looking a bit scary. I wanted to change avatars, since I'd used the same one since I joined the forum some years ago - and on a whim, took this Mickey picture. It's that chipping paint on his left eye (right side of photo) that gives it that Psycho Mouse look. Poor lil guy. I think he means well. Well, so I've decided maybe he represents a hitherto unknown part of my personality - but if I start behaving the way he looks, I'll change the picture again! RB
