Strange Afternoon

I got a call from a singer/guy that said he had gigs in Austin and that pays BIG and is booked starting the end of June. We agreed on a place to meet to exchange set lists/CD's. I drove 50 miles  We met. He commenced to informing me that he had to get "real players" for this gig. To make a long story short I asked " What or who is running the P.A.?" He replied." What's a P.A.? I then thought to ask "Have you ever Sang in front of people?" He replied " Not actually with a mic or anybody listening but I know I can sing". I left. Was that rude? Hopefully just Strange!

Reminds me of a common sentiment I see on "vocalist wanted" ads... "Karaoke singers need not apply."

Too bad he wasted both your time and about $300 in gas.

What one man considers "big money" is chump change to another. Perspective matters.

Bill that did sound like a disaster in the making.

Herb, thank goodness I've been around long enough to recognize a disaster in the making. More realistically it's one of those Deja Vu things where I asked myself "Knowing what I know do I want to put up with all this just to play in Austin? Things like Motel Rooms, placees to eat , itineraries.CONTRACTS, etc. didn't enter his scenario of the event. He pictured he's go to Austin and empress the club owner so much that it would be a shoe-in gig and the "WoRD" will get out about him.  I don't know if any of you guys have run into performers such as this. He has NO concept of rehearsal or how important a Bass Player is! One of his prospects is a great guitar player that's willing to play bass.

I have run into some self appointed folks like that. Legends in their own minds..... in some cases, a "has-been" from a one hit wonder band trying desperately to be somebody again.... promises that are impossible to deliver on .....

Isn't that how every any bassist comes into existance?

Nantucket.... the band from NC.... never had a bass player until they were signed to a label. The label demanded it as conditions for signing.

Up till then the keyboard player kicked the bass.

I don't think there was harmony in the group from that point forward until they broke up.

They were quite famous in NC, and had one chartable song.... then they faded from the scene... I think they still play clubs with a slightly different line up now on occasion.

Back in the day, we'd call these types "MTV Dreamers". It just looks so easy to get a band together and be a star. They can sing along with the radio, and it sounds good them, so they just assume it's a breeze to success.

Then there were the "Air Promoters". Guys who would come up to me at a gig, and say something like "I'm putting together a "big" show, and I'd like you guys to play". "Really?, where is the show?" "Um...well I don't have a place yet, but I know a guy who get me (insert big venue here), so probably there". (Venue seats 5000 and costs 7000 bucks to rent, plus expenses) "Who else is playing?". Umm...well....I'm going to ask (insert other local bands). At about this time in the conversation, we would test the guy with, "What's the budget for talent?" "Erm...what do you mean?"

    "Nice talkin with ya."
