Strange Playback Problem

I have a desktop and a laptop with Sonar installed. I upgraded the laptop to X1 (with current patches) with no problems, everything works fine. The desktop still had Vista on it, so I did a clean install of Windows 7, and reinstalled all software. With everything installed, I opened a simple project that has three VST synths and some audio files. The audio tracks play back fine. I can open each of the synths individually and get sound from them inside Sonar. But the synth tracks do not play back with the project. If I start it at the beginning of the MIDI data, the first note plays, but that's it. The transport keeps moving, but no sound from the synths. The meters are moving on the MIDI tracks, the I/O is assigned correctly, but no sound is being output by the synths beyond the first note.

I've been digging around in the settings for a while, but can't figure out what's going on. Never seen this problem before. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Which VST Synths? Is there a patch selected?
    What soundcard do you have?

Check the MIDI tracks in the Event List view and see if there may be patch changes or other controls that are causing it not to play.

Synths are OP-X, Arturia Minimoog V and BFD2. The patches are saved in the project. They're correct, and I can play them back within Sonar using a MIDI controller. Interface is E-MU 1616m. Audio tracks play back fine. The data in the MIDI tracks is intact, and the meters on those tracks are moving during playback.

It could be an audio driver setting, but I've been messing around with those and can't find a fix.

Not if the audio tracks are playing fine. It has to do with the MIDI tracks. Either the I/O is not set right or you have something else wrong.

Load Tutorial1.cwp and assign the MIDI tracks to the TTS-1 and see if that plays properly.

I'm confused... you have a desktop and a laptop. Does it work on either one of them? Did you ever have this working?  What version of Windows?

The project was originally done in 8.5, but was saved on the laptop with X1 before I transferred it. Both computers have Win7 32-bit/Sonar X1. It works fine on the laptop. I'm able to start a new project on the desktop with the same synths and they work fine from MIDI tracks. So it appears that something specific to the project is causing the problem.
