X1 and AKAI MPK49 via USB

Odd thing that I am having a brain-block on.

I cannot use the AKAI MPK49 as the input MIDI on a track. When I try to select that as the input, it goes back to none. Oddly enough, if I just go to All inputs>Midi Omni, the MPK49 works. But why doesn't it work when I set input to AKAI MPK49 directly.

That said, I migrated 8.5 settings in to X1. I checked MIDI preferences, and have the MPK49 selected as a device. There is a MIDI IN2 and 3, and a MIDI OUT 2 that both have (AKAI MPK49) next 2 it. I know I can put it through the FW-1884 MIDI and it will work correctly - just wondering why USB it does not (and it works correctly in 8.5.3).

Not sure why this is ...any ideas?

"None" is the same as "Omni" when selected as the Input. Sonar will record whatever input it gets.

Did you read this in the manual?

    IMPORTANT
The operation of the MIDI OUT port changes  depending on whether or not a USB cable is
    connected to the MPK49.
    • USB cable connected:
MIDI data from your computer is passed to the MIDI OUT port.  When a USB cable is
connected, you should activate  "MIDI echo" in your sequencer if you want the MPK49 to
    control another external device.
    • USB cable not connected:
Whatever you play on the MPK49 is sent to the MIDI OUT port.
Note: If you have another device connected to the MPK49's MIDI IN port, that device's
    MIDI information will be ignored.

Do you have a USB cable connected?

Do you have a USB cable connected?

I do. The interesting thing is that it works just fine in 8.5.3 - which is on the same computer. It is only connected through USB.  And it does show up in preferences and is selected correctly. Lastly, it works FINE on "All Inputs", so obviously the computer receives the signal just fine. I just cannot select the Akai MPK49 for Input and not have it go back to None (which has no response).

Below is the import that worked in 8.5.3 that cannot be loaded in X1:

    1. In Sonar, go to Tools/ Sonar Plugin manager.
    2. In Categories, select Control Surfaces.
    3. In ‘Registered Plugins', choose Cakewalk Generic Surface.
    4. Press Insert, then navigate to the file named "MPK49.spp" and press Open.
    5. Go to Options / Control Surfaces.
    6. Press Add new control surfaces.
    7. Choose Cakewalk Generic Surface.
    8. Select USB AUDIO DEVICE 2 to both the IN PORT and the OUT PORT
    9. Press Close.
    10. Go to Tools / Cakewalk Generic Surface.
    11. Under ‘Presets’ select Akai MPK49.
To use the MPK49 transport controls in sonar, do the following:
    1. Select Options / Control Surfaces.
    2. Press the Add New Control Surface button
    3. Choose MMC for control surface, and choose USB AUDIO DEVICE for in and out ports.
    4. Press OK.

Which is somewhat different in X1, which in these directions, seems #5 down.

I have this exact problem, except with an Access Virus TI2!  stays to "none", even after I select Virus as an input.  When I select all midi inputs or omni, it sees the signal just fine.  The Virus shows up as a midi input in the list, X1 just wont let me select it.

EXACTLY!!!! Not sure what to do. I guess I can call support in the morning if nothing crops up here.

Does yours work in 8.5.3 though (or whatever previous version you have)?

Same problem here when using an M-Audio Oxygen 8 v2.

Running x1b build 246. Can't comment on v8.5 as I'm a new user to the Sonar world.

I have an Akai LPK connected via USB.  It worked intermittently for a while, and now does not work at all.

I will call support tomorrow and explain my issue (and the others that have an issue on this thread) and either will get an answer, or have this documented and report back.

    Re:X1 and AKAI MPK49 via USB 2011/05/16 10:07:50 (permalink)
I talked to Ryan.  It is a known bug they are working on.  Here is his suggestion:

    Hi Frank,

Do you have the latest QuickFix installed? If so, we have an issue on file that was introduced with QuickFix 245/246.

Basically in Edit > Preferences > MIDI > Devices, if you do not enable all of your available MIDI ports in the list, you will see some weirdness when assigning MIDI inputs on your tracks. The input assignment will either jump to "None" or will jump to the MIDI port above it in the list in MIDI Devices.

This doesn't happen if you have already selected all of your available MIDI ports or if your device only has one MIDI port, which explains why not everyone is seeing this behavior.

Try enabling all of your MIDI inputs in Edit > Preferences > MIDI > Devices.  If that doesn't help. rolling back to X1b will.

In any case, we know about this and I'm, personally, hoping we can have a fix soon. In the meantime I don't have any additional information however.

Let me know if the above helps. If I'm confusing the issue I'd like to know more so we can get it documented.

    Best,

Well, that saves me a call!  Thanks Frank!

I did select all MIDI devices, and it seems to work (though a little intermittently).

Thanks for calling Cakewalk & posting the info bigboi.

At least we now have a workaround until it's patched properly.
