Compressor suggestions

I think sonitus is locked to Cakewalk, but I may be wrong.

I use Voxengo's Elephant limiter for mastering - works great.  The Marquis comp is more flexible, and a comp not limiter.

I reckon a proper engineer could get absolutely stellar results with them

Maybe the guys at FabFilter are smart enough to just stay away from the whole *multi band* comp thing.

+1/2 for Waves: L(L) multi-maximizers/ultra-maximizers

Unfortuantely, waves is still 32 bit and is seriously compromized by 64-bit adaptations, including their own engines (IIRC) and their iLok bugs.  I warn all to not gleefully purchase Waves stuff; Waves is officially incompatible with Sonar 64-bit.  All the bridges (J-bridge, Bit-bridge, patchy algorhythms, iLok-interactions, etc.) are negated per Cakewalk tech support.  Furthermore, for me, Waves are all CPU hogs in 64-bit Sonar ... and may only be trusted in 2-3 instances, and my Windows Experience Scores (2 DAWs) are in the 70's.

Fortunately, The Waves limiters do yield a 'unique' and powerful 'interpretation' of busy mixes in a fast and tidy manner.  But you'd probably export to a 32-bit mastering program, like SoundForge (instead of trusting 64-bit Sonar's Master Buss).  I comp-mastered TruckerMusic's Big Blue Sky with Waves LL mutli-maximizer and wouldn't touch it with Ozone.

If you/I are eclectic, you/I may discover that some mixes do better with Waves, Elephant, Ozone, and/or little mastering at all.

+1 on an accurate EQ (per Bat): I've saved a henious mix or 2 by narrowly reducing offensive EQ sibs, or boosting subs.

Update:

I got a demo for the Voxengo Elephant. It didn't go well with my music, especially with the snare. As of the two, i liked Ozone's maximizer/limiter more. I couldn't find a demo for Voxengo's Marquis though.

Next stop is the Waves limiter, though i'll find if they have demos.
Then FabFilter-Pro Limiter.

Yes, i use a seperate mastering DAW (WaveLab 4), and i use Cubase 5 as my mixing daw.
(I'm sorry. I just love this forum so much that i refuse to leave even if i changed my DAW for quite sometime now.)

Yes i have tried, but it's something with the release time of the limiter. It squashes my snare in a bad way, even if i compress it first. Unlike the one on Ozone, which has a slider with the very fast, fast, smooth, etc..

Is there as similar feature in Elephant?

I'm looking for some good compressors for mastering, I don't like the ones included on wavelab, and i'm not entirely happy with the multiband in Ozone 4. It is very good post.

all of the suggestions above are excellent.  I currently only use Ozone.

The world is awash with good, simple - and cheap - compressors. But I still use the Sonitus compressor more than any other. I'd switch to FabFilter Pro-C if I could afford it. Ozone's still my primary tool on the back end, but I would switch to FabFilter Pro-L in a minute - if I could afford it.

Maybe I should try standing by the freeway onramp with a cardboard sign: "need plugins. Please help."

And run it inside any prgram that supports VST.

Cytomic The Glue and PSP Old Timer are both good for mastering/master bus applications.  There's enough variety between both of those plugins to do just about anything you'd ever need to do.
