Real Guitar - Second Instance Crashes Sonar

I have Sonar X1b and am using Real Guitar 2.

The problem is that I am able to use just one instance of Real Guitar without Sonar crashing constantly. Everything is fine with just one instance of Real Guitar; no problems at all. If I setup a second instance a short time later everything freezes. When I click anywhere on the screen everything turns to a washed-out gray with a small window with the option to 'End Processes'.

My computer specs are as follows:

Processor: Pentium 4 3 Ghz.
Hard drive: Samsung 1TB with loads of free space.
Memory: 8 GB.
Video Card: GeForce 9500 GT (512 MB).
O/S: Win 7 64 Bit.
Sound Card: M-Audio Delta 192

I have all the latest drivers.

I Have had this problem with Real Guitar since the day I first installed it since Sonar 8. I have tried both 32 bit and 64 bit versions and presently I am using Sonar X1b 64 bit (with Real Guitar 64 bit version of course). I have tried tweaking latency settings and just about every other hardware setting in Sonar. I have disabled all other programs from running in the background.

As a work-around I am learning how use CC data in a MIDI track to control the one instance of Real Guitar. Thanks to the MIDI Strumming thread and with the help of Susan and Konrad I've made a good start on this.

I do realise that this could be a MusicLab problem and not Sonar but I think that there are many people here using Real Guitar in Sonar without any problems. I will also try contacting sergey at MusicLab.

It's not much fun making my music at the moment so I would be really grateful if anyone here could help.

Many thanks.

Michael

    Hi Michael,

what version of Sonar are you running - 64bit or 32bit ?.
Also which version of realguitar - 64bit or 32bit ?.

I haven't downloaded and installed the 64bit Rg2 yet, but I'm pretty sure I've had projects with multiple RG2 instances
in X1/64 without any crash problems.

I recently purchased jbridge, because recording automation is a real problem with bitbridged VSTs when running Sonar 64bit.

It doesn't seem to matter what the VST is - if it's 32bit under Sonar 64(8.5 or X1), recording automation is impossible with bitbridge (use jbridge !).

I am quite sure I can run many instances of 32 bit RG2 under Sonar 64 without crashing.
I'll check when I get back to my DAW tonight.

If you're running Sonar 64, make sure you download the 64bit RG2 update and try that.

    Cheers

I used three instances frequently on Sonar 2.2 (!) and use multiples on X1 all the time, so not sure.

I run Sonar in 64-bit mode but run RG as 32-bit.  Had a number of problems getting VIs/plugins running as 64-bit VSTs, but the problems were not related to multiple instances.

    Sorry--no advice on this.

sounds like sonar is trying to use the same real guitar for the second track instead of opening a new one..it has a smell of a bridge prob.

I use 2 instances RealGuitar sometimes, like the project I am working on now. The biggest problem I have is that  in both instances I have pattern play set to half time and it (Sonar) never opens with RealGuitar playing back the recorded tracks that way. I finally got tired of resetting the pattern manager in both instances and just froze the tracks. I don't like doing that because I can't make minor changes anymore but oh well.

+1 for JBridge-bit bride is terrible-IMHO. Even the interface looks better omn the VST with JBridge.

    Thanks everyone for your replies.

I forgot to mention in my original post that the problem happens when I use the MIDI out feature of Real Guitar to play another plugin instrument. For example, the Garritan Jazz guitars. I know the instruments of Real Guitar are high quality and excellent but for this project I do need to use the MIDI out feature. When I use the default Real Guitar instruments everything seems fine and I am able to load and use two instances of Real Guitar in Sonar without crashing.

    To answer people's questions:

cliffr -what version of Sonar are you running - 64bit or 32bit ?.
Also which version of realguitar - 64bit or 32bit ?.

Thanks for replying Cliff. At present I am using both Sonar and Real Guitar 64 bit. However, I have tried this in 32 bit as well for both.

pwal: tried posting at the musiclab forum?

Thanks for calling by pwal. I sent a request to Music Lab Tech Support. I had a reply this morning and they asked me to send them the file for investigation which I'll do.

konradh: I used three instances frequently on Sonar 2.2 (!) and use multiples on X1 all the time, so not sure.

Hello again Konrad. Your CC system works beautifully. Using just one instance of Real Guitar and changing the MIDI data = no crashes in Sonar. This definately resolves the issue for me at the moment.

chuckebaby: sounds like sonar is trying to use the same real guitar for the second track instead of opening a new one..it has a smell of a bridge prob.

Thanks for the observation Charlie. Sounds like a real possibility considering the problem occurs using the MIDI out feature. (Which I forgot to mention originally - sorry everyone.)

pianodano: ..... I have pattern play set to half time and it (Sonar) never opens with RealGuitar playing back the recorded tracks that way.

Thanks for replying Danny. I always have my tracks playing back at full time. I've never tried your approach.

stratman70: +1 for JBridge-bit bride is terrible-IMHO. Even the interface looks better omn the VST with JBridge.

Thanks for calling by. I realise you were replying to Cliff. Just to clarify I don't use either j-Bridge or bit-bridge.

Thanks again everyone. As I mentioned, the issue might not be a Sonar thing. Anyway, I'll see what Music Lab Tech Support say and thanks again. I will report back if we discover what's happening.

Hi Michael, thanks for the info.

I can confirm that I have used multiple instances in X1/64 under jbridge, but using the MIDI-out is another story.
I had tried using the midi-out under the bitbridged 32bit plugins with Sonar 8.5.3 and X1, but the results were crap.
Very much like trying to record automation, which I ended up buying jbridge to get around - and jbridge does a wonderful
job of fixing those issues with all the remaining 32 bit plugs I'm stuck with.  I don't know if jbridge fixes the midi-out issue I
was experiencing - so I'll have to try it out now.

I haven't installed the real guitar 64bit plugs yet (or X1/32 which I need for a couple of things), but I'll try and get around to
do this over the next few days and see if I can reproduce the issue you've found.

Meanwhile, please let us know if you get anywhere.

    Cheers
