Duane Allman and slide guitar
I've got this song I want to play slide guitar on and it got me thinking of Duane Allman. There's so much I don't know about him but I've always loved his playing. Read the Wikipedia page and saw that Eric Clapton first noticed Allman from his work on Wilson Pickett's version of Hey Jude. I'd never heard that song, so I searched that and found it on You Tube. It sounds like Clapton at the end. A great guitarist, gone too soon.

I had/have that song on Duane's Anthology LP. It's in storage, so I don't have it at hand. I'll try to check it out on You Tube. I don't remember noticing if EC played on it. I'm fan, but not a guitar player; so I might not notice the difference.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot--hey, who the hell are you guys? X2(X3 pending hardware upgrade), Emulator X2, E-mu 1212M, Virtual String Machine

There's a triangle defined by Daytona, Macon, and Tallahassee where people have the Allman's music in their blood. The Allman Brothers Band left a huge footprint here in Tallahassee. They had a crash pad just up the road from my house and a just before my time generation of locals tell great stories of jamming, hanging out, and sharing ideas. It's cool to learn you are getting hip to Duane. best regards, mike

Back when I was 20/21, my roommate turned me on to Live from the Filmore and it just blew my mind. I would listen to those long jams and just go to another place. Truly a special talent.

Side 4 of the Duane Allman anthology (2-LP set for those that remember vinyl....) was in constant rotation in my place back in college. "Dreams" was known to induce a catatonic state in all but the most music resistant listeners. A buddy used to call that track "audio methadone".

Thanks for that link, Mike. Lots of good stuff there, including old footage from Fillmore. I watched a couple of them already and will check out more later. I bought Layla when it first came out and din't know who anyone on the album was except Clapton. I've admired Allman's playing since then, but I really didn't know anything about him except that he played in the ABB and died in a motorcycle crash. He was a popular session guitarist before he started the ABB and the list of artists whose songs he played in is pretty impressive. I remember an article from Rolling Stone way back in the seventies where Gregg was describing how he joined the band. Duane called him up and asked him to join his new band. Gregg said "sure". Then Duane says, "oh, did I mention you'll be playing organ?" Gregg said he'd never touched an organ before, he was a guitarist, but he began a crash course in how to be a Hammond organ player and the rest is history.

Greg I don't know how many times the Rolling Stone mag had them but I remember (if it's the same article) that....I really got a kick of Duane talking bout their trip to Mexico. I was in a 5 piece band (3 guitars) when they hit and had a blast playing their music. Man I'm sure not going to compare and wish Duane was still slidin' but Derek Trucks sure is hot.

Derek has sure had a lot of loving *uncles* teach him everything they know. Derek used to play around here when he was a teenager (and younger) and he was smoking hot even then. The tradition of dad's and uncles and family and porch learning are still alive and well. :-) Here's a link to an Tallahassee old timer who can tell stories about Greg and Duane, sneaking on stage as under age teenagers to sit in, way back in 1963 at the clubs around Daytona. http://www.charlesatkinsbluesband.com/bio.php
