bounce down question


Have read here it is best to bounce down from mix to 32 bit. So, does that mean 32 bit at 48?

And is it best to bounce your tracks at 32/48  or import them at that? 

I noticed even though I bounced it at 32/48 when I import it to a new project, it says converting to 32 bit... am confused.

    Do you mean exporting a mix or a track bounce?
    A track bounce will automatically be set but you have options when exporting your mix. If it's going to a CD then you go with 16/44.1
    If your sending it for mastering then leave it alone. I could be wrong but in my system Sonar leaves it in it's working format unless I change it.

    hey johnny v ,
       this is taking all the tracks and making one stereo file. I have read to put it at 32 bit to give more headroom, but not sure exactly when to do it, or if it really matters when. As I bounce to stereo track, or as I import the stereo track into a blank project to master...

    32 bit is a file depth many other programs can't handle, so you can't use it in them.  But nothing wrong with using it - 32-bits gives a little more leeway for adding the numbers, but no interface can output 32 bits.  If you have enabled the 64 bit engine you should be just fine.  That does the calculations in very rarified territory.  I use it, and then bounce etc. the file to 24 bits.

    Bit depth has nothing to do with headroom per say. It is simply a longer word length, more bit's, more info for the audio file. The more the merrier.
    As far as I can tell Sonar will take care of those grimy details if you have set them in your audio options. I'm pretty sure all work done from within the program is in 32Bit if so set that way.
    So if you are using Sonar for both mixing and mastering all should be good. Just go to audio options and make sure everything is ramped up for the better quality settings.

    The format you use for your final export depends on where the file is going next.

    If you're going to be burning a CD, you have to use 16 bits at 44.1KHz. If you're going to be encoding to MP3, you'll need to determine the highest quality that your encoder can handle (24 bits at 44.1KHz is a reasonable expectation). If you're going to load the file into another SONAR project for mastering, export it as 32 bits and keep it at whatever sample rate you recorded it in. Same if you're going to send it out to be mastered by someone else.


    All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.
