Driver Issues

Ok, so after a week of waiting for everything to arrive - I've got everything I need to get started!

Win 7 PC more than capable, sonar x1, M audio M track interface, and LDC mic with XLR connection into interface.

However, I'm struggling to configure the system correctly, I think i need some info on the drivers and which one to choose and what the difference is between them.

When i load up I 'sometimes' get a message asking me whether I'd like to 'disable'  my M track or 'use anyway'?

I opt for use anyway and proceed to preferences to set up the system.

I have 4 drivers to choose from:

 WDM/KS, WASAPI, ASIO and MME

WDM/KS doesn't recognise my audio device when i run wave profiler,
WASAPI just crashes the program and shuts it down (when running WP),
ASIO doesn't really do anything - it just removes what i had in my input and output list,
Now, the MME driver does seem to work for playback when i assign my speakers to it and i have managed to record a sound through it but the timing has been way off and on play back of the record, sounds slower than the speed i recorded it.  I've checked tempo's and other manual controls and their doesn't seem to be anything engaged on the software to make this happen i.e. I think its something to do with the driver.

I've also read that the MME driver should not really be used when you have an audio interface (which i have) as the other drivers are better...?

I also get messages saying that 'silent buses have been detected'?  What does this mean?

The M track didn't come with a driver installation disk - like old hardware used to - but i believe it has configured itself the first time i plugged it in.

Advice appreciated...

Go to the M-Audio website, download and install the drivers for the device http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/MTrack.html

The silent bus warning may be related to the improper device configuration.

So...What did you have on your input/output list that the ASIO driver cleaned?
If you have the latest ASIO drivers for your M-Audio (from M-Audios site), and M-Audio is chosen as your Recording- and Playback Timing Master, and the in/out drivers are respective ASIO-drivers, you should be good to go.

Silent buses mean just that - buses, from which the signal isn't routed anywhere to get heard.

Use ASIO. It's arguably the fastest driver. Go to the M-Audio web site and download and install the latest ASIO driver for your device and operating system.
You'll then have the select the M-Audio device and driver under Preferences (P on the computer keyboard)>Audio. Set it as the recording and playback device.
You will only be able to use one audio device when in ASIO mode, which is a good thing. No conflicts with other sound cards trying to control the sound.

Doh!  Feel like a fool - Downloaded it and it seems to work fine!!

Still awaiting for some headphones to arrive so currently can't hear what's playing as the output option on the ASIO won't let me select my pc speakers plugged into the PC (as currently don't have a large jack to plug speakers into AI)

The "'disable'  my M track or 'use anyway'?" message shows up when you have the bit depth set different in the DAW than on the Audio Interface.  You may want to make sure that they are both set to 16 bit or 24 bit.
