ProChannel Compressor Versus...

I'm thinking of purchasing the PSP OldTimer based a recommendation by a trusted source. Interested to learn how some of you who are lucky enough to own other well thought of compressors like PSP Oldtimer has an opinion as to how the PC stacks up against the competition? And/or - which compressor would you think the PC best compares with?

I also think the VC64 is pretty solid.

For mixing into a bus compressor I often use the Glue (it's GREAT!) and sometimes, for an older sound, the Nomad British Bundle Neve-clone. When (pre)mastering I often use IK's Fairchild and/or Optic and sometimes Bootsy's free bus comp. I think the PC has a very nice bus comp and of the one mentioned above it's probably closest to the Glue as it's also an SSL-emulation. I've come to use th PC 4K more and more though due to it's accesability and it does sound good (even if I slightly like the Glue better and Fairchilds etc have a different sound if I'm after that).

For tracks I often use Stillwells Rocket or Major Tom as well as IK's Classic, Fairchild and Optic. Sometimes I use Bootsys comps and as I slowly make a transition from SONAR 8.5 to X1 I find myself really liking the PC 1176 as well, easy to use and a really nice sound as well as being so easily accesible. Yeah, the VC64 is pretty nice as well, it's based on the Kjaerhus GAC-1 and used to have aretail price around $ 200 and recieved 9 out of 10 in the Computer Music magazine. As the PC track comp is a 1176 clone it's probably closest to the Rocket of the ones mentioned eariler even if the Rocket has a few more tricks up it's sleves.

I've also used the Liquid Mix a lot earlier but as I don't find it really stable I'm trying to phase it out from my newer mixes.

Check out the demo for Old Timer and see if it ads anything to the workflow or sonically that you like.

the vintage channnel i think is a very overlooked, but powerful tool.
it has two eqs and two compressors and is capable of sophisticated routing all within a single plugin.
it can be a bit overwhelming at first, but if you click the word "manual" on the ui it brings up some very helpful documentation.

it has vca or optical compression, side-chaining PLUS a biiiiuilt in de esser, expander gate, 5 filter options on every eq band, etc.

i think the PC is great tool too.   i think cake should make it a vst and sell it to anyone.   it would help get their name out to other daw users.

Very useful responses here - Thanks!

I like the Stillwell plugs and the Bootsy plugs. I need to get used to more of a process for picking the right compressor for the job. It seems as though I'm hearing more a push here for the Glue versus the Oldtimer.

Experimenting with the PC, so far I like it for lighter buss compression as in... It sounded really good. I'll be interested to listen to much more on this topic.

Update - I just purchased the Old Timer plug and - it's the real deal. Smooth, full and responsive. Linked with the VC64 on certain uses, it gets even better. I should say it has a wow factor.
