Tips on writing synth lines

I have started making songs, and making the drum beat is not the problem. I just can't make up good synth lines. Any ideas on how to do this successfully?

That comes from within... you gotta tune in, turn on and drop out, man.

Good question I have know idea.

Someone wise once said they start with silence and then take away all the parts they do not like.

Personally I just sort of let it fall out the end of my fingers and as Zuma observes

That which comes from within... you gotta tune in, turn on and let it drop out, man or woman.

Its all about having a good musical vocabulary. Study the work of other artists in different musical genres and then add your own ideas to them. An author can't write a very interesting book if he doesn't have a mastery of the language in which he is writing and doesn't know how to express himself. Its the same with music.

I'll survive it. I usually edit myself but you saved me the trouble this time... I owe you one.

Edit: I often find altered states of consciousness work great for coming up with mind blowing synth lines.

All of Dave's point are also very valid.  Being totally self taught I have done a fiar bit of reading, in one book on music theory there was a wonderful comment on the subject.

"It is important to learn all the rules of music theory so you can break them appropriately."
