drag it from your d drive to the drive where your sonar folder is.  Then go into preferences - file -and put the new locations

I there any advantage or disadvantage to having the audio on a different drive?

I have my audio and projects all stored on a "D" drive, and Sonar (and all other programs) are installed on my C drive.

    Thoughts?

I think you can just drag it, and I think you can change the pointer in Preferences.

The advantage for having audio files and libraries on a second drive is hardware. One drive seeking all the data AND program stuff is slower than if two drives can do it.

It is better to have samples, loops etc. on a separate drive from your operating drive.

Furthermore, it is better top have your project data on yet a third drive.

That way, different drives are accessing different data at the same time, making everything run better, because:

If everything is on one drive when running sonar, that hard drive is being accessed for a bunch of stuff at once, which is less ideal for performance.

    oh boy.

"pointer" is just our descriptive term.

I give you, the SONAR Preferences video:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rawGwZtyH00

Around :47 is where you want to pay attention, as it describes folder location settings for gobs of things as well as the main audio library. But it would be good for you to familiarize yourself with the whole thing for reference.

if you refering to the audio and midi library that comes with sonar you can just move those.  you don't need to put in anything in preferences for those files.  when you want to access them just use the browser and go to the location you moved them to.  There is also an option under preferences for you global audio folder this is where sonar records audio to and saves audio data from projects.  it is under preferences-file-audio data-global audio folder.  i prefer this on seperate drive than your c but that is up to you.

D00d we gave you the answer like five times already.

Just go into regular Windows explorer windows and drag 'em where you want 'em.

If you watched like ten seconds of that video, and then of course followed it up with trying it yourself, you'd see the dialog for AUDIO files as well as the main list of folder locations for other things, one of which says MIDI and the other says LIBRARY.

Now where are those free fans? And are talking window, ceiling, or box fans? I'm hot. Unless you're talking groupies, in which case I'm still hot.

Re:Sonar Audio Library on different drive. Want it on sonar drive C: 2011/05/22 20:41:44 (permalink)
Don't try and do these file moves with SONAR's media explorer, do it in regular Windows. All you're doing is moving files from one location to another just like any other file.

Dbl-click your "D" drive icon and click through until you find your audio library and/or files. Select and CTRL-X to CUT them.

Now open where you want the files to be, find that folder and when it's open CTRL-V to PASTE them. Again SONAR does not even (and probably should not) even be open, this is a simple Windows file moving function.

Now go watch that SONAR preferences video again. Open SONAR and hit "P" to open the Preferences.

Under FILE there is a "FOLDER LOCATIONS" item. Click on it and marvel at all the locations you can customize. The entry you're probably interested in is called "Wave Files". You can select anywhere, but you probably want wherever you keep your audio "library". I keep mine on my "E" drive so that's where it points.

Now click on "AUDIO DATA". The first entry here is the big one. "GLOBAL AUDIO FOLDER". Now at this point you'll want to make some decisions on how you save your SONAR projects files and related audio files. Nearly everyone uses "Per Project Audio Folders" to some degree. I do but I keep my SONAR project files in a different location, but you can set it up however you like. At any rate, point the GLOBAL AUDIO FOLDER to wherever your SONAR-related audio files are kept.

A distinction to make here since I suspect it could come up: there's a difference between a library of audio files you keep for general use, and the audio files specifically used by SONAR project files. For example, on my E Drive I have a folder called "AUDIO" that contains ALL my SONAR-related project files. There's a gazillion sub-folders for every SONAR project I have so "AUDIO" is my SONAR-specific GLOBAL AUDIO FOLDER.

I also have a folder called "_SOWND" (cute, right?) that contains my entire library of random audio files. Sound efx, field recordings, sheesh all sorts of crap. That's where my "WAVE FILES" entry points to. So when I want to look for loops or sounds SONAR will default to that location.

To go a step further, I also have a D DRIVE. On that drive I keep all my sample libraries, which although they contain tons of audio files, are all tied to some sampler patch or whatnot. This way the sampler synths pull from D, SONAR records and pulls from E. (to really blow your mind, D is also where I keep my SONAR project files...even tho the audio files are on E)

I figured it out you all were correct.
I just took my audio and midi library and drag them to a Sonar folder.  Then I erased whats in D.  and I tried cakewalk, and it worked WOW it recognizes

    thx all :)
