Opening projects in earlier versions of SONAR

Hi all,

I am running Producer (8.5) for my main DAW.     I also have a extra laptop and Home Studio 4 (yes, I know...)  that I wanted to put on the laptop to off-load some editing work from time-to-time.

Are there any tips/tricks for getting projects that were done in 8.5P to open in Home Studio?   After reading some of the tech docs it sounds like this is possible.  Of course, trying to actually open some projects proved otherwise.

I would expect the audio tracks to be just fine so this must boil down to the plugins, right?

I am hoping that someone may have already suffered this pain and could shed light on things to look for (or avoid altogether).

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!
-Dennis

I don't have any experience of version 4, but Home Studio 6 will open project files created in later versions, provided that the project does not rely any advanced features and there are not more than 16 buses or 64 audio tracks.

Missing plugins will not prevent the project opening or running, but it will generate a warning message.

Why don't you install Pro 8 on the laptop? Sonar is one of the few DAW's that allows you to install on a second machine as long as you agree not to be running both at the same time.

Thanks for the feedback.   I may go the way of putting Pro 8 on the laptop.  I was under the impression that the licensing forbade that.

    Much appreciated.

licensing allows installation and use on 2 machines as long as you are the one using it (i.e. you can't install on 2 machines and let someone have one of the machines).

also, what kind of errors are you getting when trying to open them?  sonar is designed to be both forward and backward compatible according to the CTO, Noel.

Here is the error dialog that shows up.

After clicking 'OK' you are left with an empty project.

Sorry...  Apparently the image didn't make it ...

    Dialog text says:

File Info: Project file version 8.5.0, authored using SONAR version 17.5.3.282.
This file was saved from a more recent software version.  It is incompatible with this version of SONAR.

This usually means that, in the project, you have incorporated some feature that is not available in the earlier version.

Maybe you should test for compatibily using a simpler project first.
