Windows7 soundcard recognition
Hi all, it's been a while since I have posted on here but I hope someone can help. I have not been able to find any reference to my problem through the search feature. I installed my copy of Sonar 7 from my desktop to my new laptop and can not get it to recognise any sound card installed. I am running Windows7 and the drivers I have located are Conexant Smart Audio HD plus a 4 part version of NVIDIA High Definition Audio. I had no problems with it when it was on the desktop unit which was also Windows7 equipped. I don't know which is the card that Sonar should be using but in the drop down Input/Output box (track) the only output options listed are Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth, New Drum Map and Drum Map Manager. None of the installed names are displayed. This has prevented me from mixing down Midi tracks to Audio. Thanks in advance, Al.

What is listed in SHS 7 Options>Audio under Playback and Recording devices? What drivers are highlighted (selected) under the Drivers tab?

Being a new computer, is it a 64-bit OS? I think SHS 7 is not 64-bit compatible. Have you installed all the updates/patches for SHS 7?

64-bit Windows requires a 64-bit driver for the soundcard. If the laptop came with a 64-bit OS, the soundcard should have the 64-bit driver installed.

Thanks for the input. I installed as the 32 Bit option (you could choose either 64 or 32) but no, I have not installed all updates on this computer. I will attend to that immediately.

Thanks Beagle, just checked, it was already set to MME(32-bit) The other options are WDM/KS, WASAPI & ASIO but I have absolutely no idea of what any of that means. Unfortunately, I am a computer user not at all technical. Cheers Al.

You only have one soundcard on the laptop unless you've added an external audio interface which it doesn't sound like you've done. It looks like the Conexant is the soundcard. I don't know what the NVidia is. Was that installed on the laptop when you bought it or did you add that yourself? If you added it, you should uninstall it. Using the built-in soundcard is not recommended and will not give you very good results. Get an external audio interface for your laptop and you'll get better results.

Understood about the quality Dave but the SHS7 should recognize what I already have. All of the sound devices mentioned were factory fitted. They show in Win.7 under Sound, video and game controllers. I agree that the Conexant is probably the card in question. Could the fact that the card is prefixed with Microphone and Speakers with the card name bracketed under the SHS Options>Audio be a problem? Could it be that a - speaker use only - option is hiding somewhere? Cheers Al.

Wait, those (Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth, New Drum Map and Drum Map Manager) are outputs for MIDI tracks. What outputs are listed for audio tracks?

Correct Greg, it is midi tracks I am working with. I want to mix them down to audio. Audio tracks are fine but when I try to mix the whole number to .Wav, I get the audio tracks but not the Midi tracks and I believe that is because I cannot locate my sound card in the Outputs drop down box. Sorry if I had not made my problem clear. Cheers Al.

try downloading ASIO4ALL and installing it, then change to ASIO driver mode.

MIDI tracks do not contain sound, just computer instructions, so unless you have each MIDI track assigned to a softsynth or to an external real synth, you won't get any sound from it. To use a softsynth, insert a softsynth (TTS-1 for example) in the synthrack, the go to the MIDI track and assign the TTS-1 as the output. Repeat for each MIDI track. In the case of the TTS-1, you can select a different sound bank and patch for each track. With other softsynths that are not multitimbral, you have to load a new instance of the softsynth for each different sound you want to record.

Right. You won't have an audio output for a MIDI track. Using soft synths, you set the MIDI track's output to the soft synth, and the soft synth's output will be audio that can be bounced or exported.

Ah yes. This is what happens when you have just a little bit of knowledge (or so you think) So it was the Soft Synth that I had lost, not the Sound Card. Thank you all very much for your patience, I believe the problem is now solved. Cheers Al.
