"Outside" playing..

what does it mean to you?
Is it simply non-diatonic?
Is it modal playing?

    That's make believe jazz.

Real jazz guys don't make that excuse when they hit a sour note.

i play outside now and then....
all the time, when i'm just practicing..

i would't call this 'outside' playing, per se, but there are elements of it throughout....

the only thing i have ready to go, is an old demo:

While there may some genre's and styles of "Jazz" where, quite literally, anything goes (Ouch!!) the vast majority adheres to the code Mike espouses above:  Real Jazzers don't hit clams.  And they fess up when they do.  I'm not sure any definition of "outside" would fully cover the range required.  It may be like the judges said of pornography...you'll know it when you see it.  Or, in this case, hear it;-)

I remember some of my old favorite guitar mags that
would include music..not tab...and the transcriptions
were pretty good although it was very often they contained
wrong info so it was good to listen to the original.

Later they started including verbal information about the
    thought process of the writer/player.
Most anybody may acquire the ability to copy or mock which
is a very good method as most African music is taught that way
but it is also important, to many, to have an understanding
of the theoritical approach or reasoning.
Should a listening or mocking of a technique or application of
theorical application be only in the music one truely doesn't
know that the player even really knows what they are playing...
other than the player knows how to make the sound.

The only difference this really seems to make is in conversation.
The music isn't hurt because the musicians can't talk about it but we
surely agree the conversations can be.....different.
