inserting rest in staff

A newbie here... How do you insert a rest at the beginning of a measure? I have been able to create one by the placement of the note but I need to manually insert one so the program doesn't delete it when I add another note.

    I'm not sure I understand your issue.  With SHS7 staff view,  when I write a note SHS7 creates rests before the note as needed.  You said you could create a rest by placement of an inserted note.  Isn't that all you need?
