Audio Flutter

Hello all.

I have a problem that I hope you can help me with. Using Sonar 8.5.3, recording audio through a Delta 44. This has always been a stable combination for me, but with a new computer and Win7, I'm getting this weird fluttering/distortion noise when recording audio. I have tried adjusting latency, different mics, cables, pres, etc - still no luck.
I have posted my specs below, hoping someone has an answer. I haven't tried deleting the audio.ini file yet - not sure of that works with Win7.

Thanks.

Intel Core i3-550 processor(4MB Cache, 3.20GHz)
4GB DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz - 4x1GB
750GB - SATA-II 3Gb/s 7200RPM, 16MB Cache HDD
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium, 64bit, English
Sonar Producer 8.5.3
M-Audio Delta 44

well, deleting the aud.ini does work the same for win7 as any previous version of windows, but I don't think that would help.  it certainly wouldn' hurt if you want to try it.

have you tried different inputs of the D44?  or different outputs?  is this only happening with what you record? not something that was recorded by someone else and played back?  (i.e. just a commercial mp3).

Thanks Beagle. I will try different inputs/outputs on the D44. It's only happening when I record with a mic, and I tried three different mics (AKGC3000/ Studio Projects C1 and T3 Tube mic). It's really weird.

the reason I ask is because I used a delta 44 for about 5 years before it started "distorting" my recordings.  initially it only happened on the inputs (but ALL inputs) then it started happening on the output as well.  I think there was a hardware failure on the PCI card.

but since Avid bought m-audio they have implemented a "service program" that you have to pay for up front, non-refundable, in 15 or 30 minute increments to call them just to open a ticket.  that doesn't even include getting to the RMA level, that's just initial tech telling you to remove the card, uninstall and reinstall, etc.

it's not worth that much money, so I gave it to goodwill and bought a MOTU.

Turn off the ceiling fan while recording.

Do you have any fluorescent lights in the room?

That might be a possibility. I reinstalled the driver for my MobilePre USB, and that's working fine - no flutter. I have to plan on a new interface. It will NOT be an M-Audio.

    Thanks Beagle.

that's what I would have suggested, if you have another soundcard to try - even your onboard soundcard would be an option to try and see if it works there.

if you have another computer to install the D44 and see if the problem exists there that would be pretty conclusive to me, but you'd probably still have to go thru Avid's crap "support" before you could get an RMA.  even if you wanted to pay for the repairs (like I did), but I did not want to pay for phone "support" that knew less about troubleshooting than I do.

when you're ready to get a new soundcard, check out my website, I have recommendations there.

Thanks Beagle. I went back to my old MobilePre USB and got it working - no flutter, so it must be the D44. Down the road I'll have to get a new card, but for now, the MobilePre will have to do.

      I appreciate everyone's help!
