What is the correct way to make layers from pre-existing tracks?

I have recorded and edited 6 single-clip tracks of the same live instrument.

I want to be able to play them back at the same time through the same effects, EQ, pan... etc. without having to fiddle with 6 separate tracks.

The ideal solution, I thought, is to copy them all to one track as layers.

But if I drag/drop them onto the same track; and then activate layers (or the other way around: Activate layers, then drag/drop),

...on my first attempt at doing this I ended up with a track that only showed two of the tracks,

...and on subsequent attempts I never even managed to get it to show only 2 tracks. It just stays as it is!

The layers button is definitely toggling as I click it (icon with lines changes), and there are definitely 6 tracks/layers in the one track (I can see them by peeling them back, so to speak), but I cannot get it to show all 6 tracks/layers at once!

What is the correct way to create multiple layers in a track from pre-existing tracks?

I have X1b with the latest quickfix 255.

When you drag the single-clip tracks into the new track, make sure you place them on top of each other at the same Now Time location. Then activate layers on the track and it should open with each clip in a separate layer.

If it doesn't, you can set things up manually, by right-clicking the small strip at the beginning of the track (in layer mode) where it show the small M and S buttons. Then choose Insert Layer from the menu as many times as you need it. Then you can just drag the clips to the new layers.

there's also a "refresh layers" option.. might be that your layers are hidding under one of your excisting layers.
when you "shift" + drag your layers to the new track then they should line up correct in time.

I've never tried adding layers to a track from other tracks.  I've always let SONAR generate new layers from successive takes on the same track.

    ...but...

It sounds like what you really want to do is send a bunch of different tracks to a bus.  That way, you can tweak the levels on individual tracks if need be, but deal with all the fx and panning in the bus.

I never use track layers for doubling up audio, because you have less control. Usually you'll want to EQ one a little differently, or maybe pan em a little. I highly recommend getting into the habit of bussing these bad boys.

Seems like the last 3 posters beat me to it.

Route your 6 tracks to a bus and apply your processing on the bus.
