'Server Busy'

I've recently started getting a message dialog when I open files:

'Server Busy, the other program is busy, choose Switch To to correct this problem'

What's that all about (Sonar 8.5)

Thanks - rev

that's an odd message from sonar that I don't think I've ever seen before.  are you sure it's a sonar message?  what is the message TITLE say (in the header of the window)?

what exactly are you doing when you get this message?  are you doubleclicking on a project file in windows explorer?

Yeah odd. I've been using 8.5.2 for a long time and I've never seen it before.

I was about to capture the dialog when it managed the Switch without me clicking anything and the box disappeared so I wasn't able to get the exact verbiage but what I quoted is very close.

It's appeared twice so far, both times after File > Open.

I've been browsing files and then doing some renaming and moving folders. Sometimes you can't move a file or folder right away even though the file is closed because Sonar is still clinging to it.

Maybe Bitbridge is the other program mentioned?

Perhaps it's still cleaving unto my last file... :)

where are your project files stored?  do you have them on a network drive?

That "server busy ..." message is from Windows and it's a standard part of an internal mechanism (OLE) that is used to send things ("objects") from one process to another. It happens when one process sends an object (e.g. a file) to another process that is busy, or gets busy processing the object that was sent. When that receiving process does not respond very soon back to the sending process, that dialog is displayed. The dialog will eventually go away when the target process finishes.

An example is drag-and-drop. It can happen e.g. when you drag something from one process to another process that then takes a very long time to process it, e.g. copying or moving a file or folder.

There is not much the sending process (e.g. dragged from) can do about it except set flags or timers in advance to basically ignore the whole thing. I've never noticed any case where the dialog is actually helpful.

The best you might be able to do is guess what you did to cause one process to send something to another process while that process was busy or got busy from what you dragged.
