q: did I destroy my HD ?

Hey.

I had to change my computer into another case. (from M-atx to ATX)

The problem is, after the change, my second HD (IDE) is not showing up at all at BIOS.

I tried to change the ide-connector, no luck. I tried different power cables from power.
No luck. There was no jumper changes.

I have two drive on my computer, one is in SATA -> which is OS and master boot drive .
The computer boots to Win XP normally, when I have the IDE the drive unplugged.

But when I connect the IDE cable, computer stucks to XP-splash screen.

My strong guess is that the IDE-drive is broken, but have I missed some BIOS-options ?

(I did use necessary caution for static electricity, so that should'nt be a problem.)

The motherboard is ASUS P5KPL-CM

I tried to boot into xin xp safe mode, gets stuck to
mup.sys

If it was just a case change and nothing else either the port on the motherboard got zapped or the drive.

Have you tried resetting the CMOS memory (BIOS)?  If not give that a try.

Also, if the drive is not strapped (jumpered) for Cable Select, try that.

I have a "grounding wrist strap" that I use when working on PC's.

Hello and thanks for the hints.

I use  "ground wrist strap" too..
    It was only case change.
I tried without/with jumper set to master. Only difference was, that when I had HD without jumper set to master, windows booted in safe mode.
Though still no sign of HD in Bios or in windows.

I guess, I could try the cmos-memory resetting but I think I'll try the hd with other motherboard tomorrow.

No big loss though, if the HD is busted. Luckily I have the data backed up in usb-drive. (300 songs)

Does the drive vibrate and get warm when you plug in the power cable? If you have access to a meter, check the power connector. Look for a bent or broken/missing pin on the connectors. When you say the disk is not showing up at bios do you mean you are not seeing a message that it is being detected during the boot sequence, or have you actually gone into the bios setup program and found that it is not available there? Make sure your bios is set to auto-detect the hard drive, or try entering the drive parameters manually in the bios. See if the questionable drive is detected in another computer.  Download the dos or linux-based test software from the drive manufacturer burn it to a floppy disk or cd and boot from that with only the questionable drive attached to the motherboard.

I tested the drive with other computer today.
It's bios sees it normally. However, now the computer won't boot to os.

I checked for the broken pins. There's one broken pin in hd.
    Could that cause problems ?

Is it broken or just not there? Pin 20 should not be there.
    Explanation.

From what I can tell, looking at wiring diagrams, (do a google search) all pins are used.  Thus if one is broken it will cause problems.

Go into BIOS and verify that both interfaces are enabled and in the correct order for booting.  Since they added SATA to BIOS, it's not just about seeing the drive anymore.

Take a look at this thread:

    Good luck.

Sounds to me like the HD controller is polling the HD... and not getting a response.
Thus, the system appears to 'hang' right before booting into the OS.

I'm guessing the IDE drive is defective (especially since you're seeing the same behavior when connecting the IDE HD to two different machines).

Since you have the raw data... it's not a huge loss.
You can pickup a 1TB Samsung F3 SATA HD for ~$60.  Sustains ~130MB/Sec... reliable... and quiet

    Thanks for input everyone.

    The pin is actually broken.

I ordered new sata II drive for 30 euro's.

I'll ask friend of mine, if he's able to solder new pin from my idle cd-drive to replace the broken one in HD.
If that won't work, I'll give up with the HD.

Is the drive less than 3 years old?
If so, it's likely still under warranty.
All you need to do is setup the RMA... and get it swapped out.

Unfortenantly the drive is 4+ years old. I can't recall if I even have the receipt left.
    Thanks for suggestion though.

Don't give up on the hard drive if your friend can't solder a replacement pin and you have important stuff on there.  You should be able to take it somewhere where they can recover your data for you.  This is especially true if the only thing wrong with the drive is the pin and not the platters.  I once had the controller die on one hard drive and was able to "borrow" the controller from an identical drive, copy all the files off, then return the controller.  In your case I'm guessing a recovery place would simply take the platters and mount them in another shell to get to the files.

Just research the recovery places a bit if you go this route, some assume you're bringing super-important data to them and charge you an arm and a leg to get it back.
