A portable recorder for sampling?

This is purely a project for my own fun. I was considering getting a portable (hand held) recorder for sampling things. Like say pets barking, meowing, and capture other sounds which would not be conducive if not impossible to capture in a stationary-based daw environment.  Basically something hand held and can record in high quality... any suggestions?

Edit: Oh I should add, I do have an iPod touch with a (I think it's called) Blue Mikey. By the company blue. Do you think something like that would suffice or would it be worth getting something else?

The Zoom models IMO are the best of the small hand held recorders.

i've heard that the Blue ipod app is cool but flakey... the complaint was that it hadn't been udated for some time and was in need of being so. Things could've changed though since I read the complaint.

The Zoom is great, but a little pricey.  I use the tascam PCM recorder.  It's 24bit, 44.1k or more, and will save a a wav or MP3. The sound is great, and it's less than $100.
