Folder Arming causes lag in play

I'm grouping my instrument tracks in folders, then toggling them to play.  Is it just too overwhelming to the system to do this and keep playing in time?  Or just skinny down the ammount of plug ins per folder?

I'd love to use this live.  Just trying to rack it all together so I can.

I just realized I didn't explain the problem.  When I toggle a folder with multiple instrument tracks, play back stumbles a split second.  Anyway to fix this?

Need to know a little more about your PC and audio device.

Audio device?  If you are using built in audio, I suspect that is causing your glitch.

I'm not using the onboard sound, have a soundcard.  Not a great one.  Creative Audigy I believe.

I have an M-audio fast track, can't wait to be rid of it and move to firewire.  I have to nudge everything left due to the lag.  But that is irrelevant for triggering MIDI instruments.

I mean, I've disarmed some of the play through buttons on almost all the instruments but one, but when I try to hit the play through on the folder it lags... nowhere else does arming the playthrough button cause a lag when I try and start using another synth.

I think I'll try using them as groups rather than folders and see if it isn't easier on the CPU.  I keep watching my CPU meter as well, and there is no real spike or glitch showing, or massive increase in Cpu useage.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say "triggering MIDI instruments."  If you mean soft synths, then lag is normal, and depends upon your audio device.  If you mean hardware, then the lag could be due to round trip latency, which is the time for the trigger and the audio to get processed back in from the hardware - also could be your audio handling device.
Play through buttons?   Input echo in Sonar language?

Getting a firewire soundcard will not change things, most likely you'll see no difference compared to USB. If your PCs FW chipset is not by Texas Instruments, don't even bother, it won't work properly.

What drivers are you using? Which one of your soundcards are you actually using, M-Audio or Audigy? Use only one, preferably M-Audio., and take care that only that one is selected in Options-dialogue.

Your workflow and settins remain somewhat unclear to me so I don't dare to say much.

Does playback 'stumble' anywhere in your project, or only at the beginning?
Does your project start at measure 1?
If so, move all your tracks to start on measure 2. You should never start a project at the beginning of measure 1.

I've tried more stuff.  what I've found is if you have multiple soft synths assigned to a track folder and wish to toggle the input through button on the track folder so that the synths work as a group, they lag the project no matter where you are in it.  It's the same type of behavior that would happen if you try to add a soft synth to the rack while playing your project... same type of hiccup.  And yes I leave space at the beginning of projects.

I'm just curious if anyone else has seen this behavior?

I need to look at some of my tutorial videos and attempt to see if I can use them in groups rather than folders.

I will say this, very, very small problem that I think I will get around in some way or another.  But I think it would be a huge advantage if I can group all of my soft synth instrument tracks into folders and not have to input echo thru each one individualy when I would like them functioning as groups.

And I am running the 64bit version of producer.  I gotta say, most of it is quite smooth and very few problems.

Could you clarify what you're toggling? It sounds like you're toggling the MIDI input echo, which would only affect live MIDI input. For existing MIDI tracks, you would want to toggle the Mute button, which will be as fast as your latency setting allows because SONAR buffers up the MIDI in advance so that soft synth tracks behave like audio.

If you are in fact toggling the echo of MIDI input from an external sequencer or live playing, you won't hear notes that start before the echo is enabled, so you'll get whatever delay there is between the time you enable it, and the start of the next event.

Either way, the solution is to toggle the Mute, and have a low latency.
