Toontrack Music City USA

Installed the pack today...loved the sounds (I also have the Nashville pack for EZ Drummer)....BUT THE MIDIS PLAYED BY "HUXFLUX" ABSOLUTELY SUCK...THIS GUY IS NOT A NASHVILLE DRUMMER...EVEN THE MORE CONTEMPORARY COUNTRY GUYS WOULDN'T PLAY THESE KIND OF FILLS......he's way to busy and frankly alot of his midis are unusable to me because of that....I emailed Toontrack asking if Chuck Ainlay (top of the heap)  recording Harry Stinson (top of the heap) at Sound Kitchen (top of the heap), then why ruin the entire project with this kid who hasn't a clue with parts that would actually fit in a country pop tune?
This is like having a Malmsteen style guitarist try to cop a Brent Mason lick.....Harry was there and I really wish he played some midis for this...or Eddie Bayers, Greg Morrow, etc.    
 
Toontrack responded by saying they don't know why Stinson didn't play the midis......again the drum sounds are great, but go elsewhere if you're looking for useable drum parts.....

    I guess the thing to remember is it is all about personal taste. While I don't normally play any country I thought the midi's are great and have used a number of them on different projects. I hear where you are coming from, you expect one thing and get another. That can be very disappointing especially when it is marketed for a specific type of use.

    I haven't heard this particular set and midi's so it's hard to comment directly on them. However - as a guitar player that has been in the country music scene since the early 80's, I can certainly understand what the OP is saying. The drums (and bass) in country music is a lesson in subtlety (they leave all the space for us guitar players - LOL), so if anything stands out too much (gets too busy) it sure can be frustrating.

    I do have the Nashville EZX, and those patterns sit great in a song - but of course that is all Harry Stinson! Out of curiosity, do those patterns match up nicely with the Music City USA kit?

    On the other side, "agape" has a great point as well. It does come down to personal taste!

    I think the Music City SDX wasn't meant to be a purely "Country" SDX.  I just read the the page and County music almost seemed as an afterthought .  I don't think it's fair the say the grooves suck. 

    The library includes good solid grooves for mainstream type tunes.  They are nice and long and include a light fill into the next section.  I would agree that the grooves included don't strike me as Country grooves but I listen to Country radio every day and most of those songs don't strike me as all that Country either.  Country drums are almost like Jazz drums to me - there's a lot of subtle stuff going on with the pure Country grooves.  I wonder how big the market is for Country midi grooves?

    Fills are always a problem for me too.  I imagine it must be hard to sit and play back fills and not get tempted to throw you best licks in.  Most fill collections are always over the top to me.

    Guys: I respect all of your opinions....I'll explain why my needs may be more specific.....The Nashville EX Pack sounds great and the midis were perfect, it was exactly as I expected....With Music City USA, the snares were a little fatter...great sounds, and with Chuck Ainlay, that's to be expected. I really don't understand why someone else, who is not a country drummer (I only had to audition a few verses and fills to figure that out) would play the midis. I demo projects in Florida for use later when I'm in Nashville. I'm involved in a studio named Treasure Isle. Jason Aldean has cut all of his records there, Montgomery Gentry, Trace Adkins, etc and a host of others did projects there this past year. They use A list players
    including Harry Stinson (I was told Harry is a great background singer as well), Eddie Bayers, Greg Morrow, yada yada yada....the point is for me to get these tunes down without having to endlessly search for a simple fill....I've heard "Huxflux" on other Superior Drums stuff....he's a great drummer, but way too busy for this genre. And I don't do old school twang, it's way more pop sounding stuff

    Had to listen to the demos... Sounds like generic crossover country music to me. Welcome to the new world of generic music, where everything sounds generic. The only difference between generic crossover country and generic rock/pop is that rock/pop is slightly more compressed, and the lead singer much less twangy on the vocal thing. Otherwise, same thing.

    If you want some old school country flavors, buy me a copy of superior and that SDX, and I'll send you some MIDI.

    Gaffpro: I think MODBOD has a really good point. Nobody says "Music City SDX" is suppose to be country! Just because it comes out of Nashville - that does not make it country. The engineers and producers in Nashville don't tie themselves to just one genre, and the city itself is a melting pot of musical styles.

    I asked earlier but I'm not sure if it got noticed. Since you have both "Music City" and the "Nashville EZX" - do the Harry Stinson midi's work well with the Music City kit? Just curious.

    Keith: Wait by your mailbox, it's on the way, lol. Seriously, I get the "generic" part of the equation...but that's been with just about every genre since the 80's....

    codamedia: I agree that it's a melting pot.....alot of LA and New York engineers and producers moved there years ago (heard all the stories first hand).....sure, alot of it to me is 80's rock with a slight twang and a hat....but that's what's working right now...personally I like the rock edge.....I haven't tried Harry's midis with Music City USA, I don't doubt it would be great.
