Sonar LE no sound output

I have Sonar LE and Windows 7 on a Dell Inspiron. No sound output. I do get a warning when first opening about no gs wavetable. Options MIDI devices has nothing in the inputs field Microsoft Gs wavetable in outputs. Presumably I need GS wavetable in inputs too.
This is very frustrating. Any ideas v welcome.
I can record from a microphone and play that back.

The MS GS Wave.....  synth will only show up as an output.  You set up a midi track's output to be MS GS Wave.....    Make sure the synth is selected in the Midi Devices output list.

If you want to record some midi, you need a midi controller/keyboard  (or midi synth) of some kind and it needs to be connected to your PC.  The connection type is dependent on the midi controller and may use a USB connection or midi connection.

Do you even have an hardware interface to plug midi into so that your controller can communicate to your Daw?

That is not needed to transmit MIDI. Most moderate price keyboards use USB. A proper soundcard is very recommendable anyway.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.

    Done that. Still no sound.
Options audio shows NME (32 bit) for Driver mode.
Shouldn't the software work out of the box with Windows7, or am I naive?

Check the volume controls (the speaker icon in the system tray).  Make sure the SW Synth control is way up and not muted.

You said the MS GS Wavetable synth appears in the list of midi output devices.  Does the list use check boxes or just list the names of the midi outputs?  If it is just a list of names then you have to select it by clicking it.  Just seeing it there is not good enough.

You said "I do get a warning when first opening the sample file".  What do you mean by a sample file?  Presumable you are opening a midi file or a project with a midi file and you are trying to play the midi.  Right?

And you are sure that the OUTPUT on the midi track is set to MS GS Wavetable?

I have no clue about wasapi.  But Google has lots of links that could shed light on it.

Sorry I could have easily checked out wasapi.  It would appear to be part of Windows7. The Sonar LE came with a mic Samson C01U and had no info about Windows7.

The Windows Audio Session API (WASAPI) enables client applications to manage the flow of audio data between the application and an audio endpoint device.
Header files Audioclient.h and Audiopolicy.h define the WASAPI interfaces.
Every audio stream is a member of an audio session. Through the session abstraction, a WASAPI client can identify an audio stream as a member of a group of related audio streams. The system can manage all of the streams in the session as a single unit.
