I have a Flextone III but I have never used it for recording. It is great for getting a good tone at low volume to noodle along with the msic cnannels on the TV. It does have XLR outs etc so I assume it would do ok but don't pay much for it. The Flextone II and III sound like a recording of a god amp, if you know what I mean, they don't have the punch or cut of a "real" amp.
I also have a POD, an original model updated to 2.0 and have used it for recording and it sounds great. I can get recorded tones from it that I cannot get anywhere colse to with the amp... however, I don't know about using the amp for DI recording, used that way it may sound as good, I don't know.
I also have a UX-2 and have had some fun with it, not recording as much as using the Toneport online, learning riffs etc... and the TP online has settings with it's UI that will, when playing through the UX make you sound just like the guitar part of the song you are playing or learning, they have a ot of songs online that you can play with or without the guitar part... so you can play it. I don't know but you may be able to do that with the POD.
Bottom line, if I were you I would buy a used POD, POD-XT if possible. IT is nt USB powered like the UX but is more powerful, is desktop, and sounds good...AND you can play it through the line inputs on a Crate Powerblock and it will kill a Flextone. The Crate Powerblock is no longer in production but you can buy them cheap and they sound really good. They are in the "Plexi-tone" playground. I run mine through a EMI Texas Heat in a Tweed Deluxe cab. It is the utimate backup amp, class D power, LOUD, takes pedals very well... did I mention it sounds good and is LOUD? It is smal enouh to stick in the back of an amp cabinet for transportation. IIRC. You can run it stereo 2x75w or 150w mono bridged....
You could probably find a used POD and Powerblock for the price of a used Flextone II and have a much more flexable unit (no pun intended). The Powerblock was and is a real sleeper... and while we are on sleepers, if you ever see one the Jordan J-100 distortion pedal is another sleeper. Think Joe Walsh. It will easily go from fuzz to distortion according to how you set the gain, it is an amazing pedal. One more sleeper IMO (most people don't give this one a chance but...) the Tech21 Comp-Tortion is a good one. The distortion is the same that Cobain used and the compression is good. Usually compression and distortion are noisy together but not in this pedal... but a little compression goes a LONG way on it. It also has a 21db clean boost if you leave the Comp and dist on 0 and just turn up the gain... what's not to like?
Well, sorry to ramble but it sort of all ran together...
BTW, have you ever checked out the Guiterdiner.com ? It is a small group of good people, guitar lovers. IT is the core group of the original HCGF (Harmony Central Guitar Forum) it broke off when HC was sold and things chenged for the worse. You might like it, it is a good group. I used to live there but don't post as much anymore. I am jbow there too.
