RME Fireface 800 and Sonar

Help. I'm at the end of my rope. I've been using Sonar for 20 years (yes, started with the DOS/MIDI only version!). About a year ago I bought a new RME Fireface 800 and am using that with a Dell Studio XPS i7 chipset 12 GB RAM Windows XP 64-bit machine, along with Sonar X and 8.5. Folks - every session I have ends up with a system lock up. I have to reboot. If I didn't save just before the lockup, data is lost of course but I am usually on top of saving and don't lose much. But it is insane that this won't stop. I have the latest firmware for the RME, the latest drivers, etc. I have tried just about everything. What do you guys think - is there any .ini file that i need to look at? Is this a known issue with RME and Windows XP 64-bit? I hope I don't have to go to Windows 7... I want to make music not screw with computers... every other aspect of my set up is stellar.
thanks!

the guys at the rme forum are very very helpful.. you might want to post your issue there as well..

I am not sure if your os and your hardware is a good combination..
I am running an older Asus P5B-Deluxe board with Win7x64, it's a bit tricky to get all the drivers,.. and to tell the truth.. I don't have all the drivers.. but it works well anyway..

You have a pretty up to date hardware but run an older os.. so I wonder if you can benefit in any way with that combination.. or if that's already the reason for your issues.. driver-problems..!

I'd also run some benchmarks with your system.. not only dpc-latency checker, but also tools like "prime95" and the like..
just to make sure that your system is stable..

Also install all the updates for Sonar..

and then please post what firewire chipset is on board of your mainboard,.. (or pci card).. for me Texas Instruments Chipsets are a must.. check that please..

I rarely have issues with my FF800.. at least XPx32 was one of the best and most stable systems I worked with.

Thanks for the quick response! I will try all of your suggestions, with the upgrade to Win 7 as the last option... :-)
    Thanks again.

    Doug,
The first thing to do is get a good TI chipset Firewire controller.
If you're still having problems at that point, it's time to take a look at the system.
The Fireface is a rock-solid unit.

    Hi Doug,

I was running XP x64 with my FF800 before I upgraded to Win7 x64.  Never had any issues related to the FF with that combo.  My box is an AMD machine however so this isn't a 100% apples-to-apples comparison.  I'll echo Jim's statement:  the biggest issue with this combination is the firewire chipset, and to a lesser extent, drivers.  You really need to make sure that your firewire controller uses a Texas Instrument chipset.  If your Dell doesn't, you should get a Firewire controller card (they're fairly cheap these days).

    AMD FX-8370, Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3,  Win7x64 SP1, 16Gb CorsairDDR3-1600, GeForce GTX 950 (390.65), SSD 525Gb (OS), SATA 3 & 1.5Tb, MOTU microlite, RME FireFace 800 (D 3.124, fw 2.77), UAD-2Q, Adam A7X, A-800 PRO, CC121
Cubase Pro 10.0.5, SonarPt-2017.10 (x64), Reason10.2, Live 10.0.5 Suite, Wavelab Elements 9.5.40, Komplete10Ult, POD Farm2.5, Omnisphere2.5, BFD3, Alesis QS7.1, Arturia BeatStep Pro, POD HD500, Alesis ControlPad, ARP Omni, many things with strings. GrSltz My Studio
