Update question!?

Apologies if this may be a dumb question, What's the general rule for program software upgrades? do you have to have the old version installed on your PC/MAC?

    Hi Zhorell-

    It depends. Updates (usually) require you to have the program installed since they're often patches and not full programs, upgrades may be completely new and self-contained, but you still have to provide proof of purchase of the required earlier version somewhere along the way.

    SONAR upgrades are self-contained, for the most part, and you can have several versions installed at the same time. Patches of course require that the app they're patching be installed.

    Depends on the upgrade.


    On my DAW, which is off line,  I have turned OFF the updater. The programs are all working fine.... why would I want to fix something that is not broke?

    Was the OP talking about automatic updates? Different question, then, and if that's what s/he's asking, I agree. No auto updating here.

    Thanks Susan.. I meant upgrade software not update on the title

    I did noticed that too, when I purchase Cubase and Sonar both upgrades and they install okay on my PC.. now I itching on buying some VST from NI and they have there upgrades on sale..  I want to make sure the same applies to those NI programs before I buy them online..

    There's a thread in the software forum on the 50% off NI products.....I'm thinking of getting Kontakt4....mine will be a crossgrade since I don't have an earlier full version.
