No Midi Sound Whatsoever
Sorry if this has been asked before, but I've been looking through forum posts all day and following their directions and nothing has worked yet. I just bought the M-audio Fast Track Pro and the M-audio 88 Keystation ES and I wanted to try Sonar X1 before I bought it this weekend. I can get sounds to play in Kontakt alone, but when I try to do anything with midi in Sonar itself I get no sound at all. The lights blink in time as I play on the keyboard, but no sound can be heard. I also can't here the midi metronome or here any of the midi examples included with the trial version. I can hear the loops just fine. I have tried every thing I can think of. I tried kontakt and added it as the synth and can get the kontakt dashboard to come up in Sonar, but nothing plays. I tried with a free synth as well and have the same result. I am running Windows 7 64 bit. Any help is much appreciated as I'd like to upgrade to the full version this weekend, but don't want to until I know it will actually work for me. Thanks!

have you checked in the preference for the sound card settings and also check your control panel to see if fast track is set right

Make sure the "input echo" is on on the track you have placed Kontakt in. It will be blue if it's on.

Under Audio and then Devices I have checked M-Audio USB ASIO Line 1 Fast Track. Under Output Drivers I have M-Audio USB ASIO Analog 1/2 Fast Track checked. Driver Settings I have Timing Master set to M-Audio USB ASIO Analog 1/2 Record Timing Master sset to USB ASIO Line 1 Fast Track Pro Midi Devices: Clicked for Input 2 - USB Keystation 88es IN (1) Fast Track Pro Midi in Clicked for Outputs Fast Track Pro Midi Out Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth 2 - USB Keystation 88es out (1) When I insert a Kontakt synth I have checked MIDI Source and Snyth property Page and Synth Rack View I push ok and the Kontakt Player window pops up. I can play notes on the keyboard and the sound meter lights go up with each key I press but no sound. Kontakt does not have anything registering on the player window (but when I run it in stand alone mode Kontakt works just fine). Input echo is on auto through on the Kontakt track. The thing is even if I go to the Midi Groove clips library and click on like pads, and then drag a pad over to a track, the pad wont play at all when I do playback. No metronome either when I press record. The fast track works fine on my Ableton Live Lite program with my keyboard, as well as with Kontakt when in stand alone mode so I don't know. Any help is appreciated, or if you need more info of what's checked or not checked let me know.

I think your troubles may be the dreaded "Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth". Uncheck that and that should sort it for you. EDITED: Because i can't read questions properly.

Microsoft GS WAvetable Syth is now unchecked and the midi channel in kontakt was already set to Omni. Even when I use Rapture I get no actual sound from the plug-in. When I play keys on my keyboard the lights light up next to the FX but no lights go up on the master slide.

I'm starting to wonder if it's actually the way everything is connected to the computer. On the keyboard itself there is only 1 USB out and 1 midi out. The USB is connected to one of the USB outlets on my computer because it's the only way the keyboard charges. The Midi out is connected to the midi in on the Fast Track Pro. From the fast track pro there is a USB cable going to the computer into one of the USB ports. Three is a midi out on the Fast Track but it has nothing plugged into it because the keyboard only has a midi out. This setup allows me to use Kontakt in stand alone mode, and use the instruments in say like Ableton Live, but does not allow me to use Rapture or Kontakt, or really play any midi whatsoever. When I remove the fast track from the equation and plug the keyboard just directly into the computer by USB, I get sound from Sonar now, but it's just that nasty midi piano sound for everything regardless of what I choose on the plug ins. Does that help?

Does that help? Make the Fast Track midi your midi selection and move it to the top (theres a button in midi prefs) and it will be the default. Now, when you insert a synth, ensure that the input to the synth is Fast Track, and make sure the synth output track is assigned to a fast track audio channel. Brian

Okay so I went in under preferences and midi then devices and both my keyboard and the fast track pro midi in are available. So I unchecked the keyboard and checked the fast track pro midi in and moved it to the top. What about the outputs under devices? I have Fast Track Midi Out, my keyboard and microsoft wavetable. I unchecked wavetable and the keyboard...hope that's right. I pushed apply. Now I went and inserted a rapture synth. The little rapture synth slider showed up at the bottom with a number 3. Input on it I put to Fast Track Pro Omni. Output I changed to fast track pro out (the only options available were fast track pro out, the rapture and new drum map. I chose a lead in rapture. Still no sound. The lights go up on the slider for the rapture...but are the lights supposed to go up on the master slider all the way to the right? Because no lights go on there.

What happens when you set the output of the track to rapture?

You're kinda all over the place I think, so do this - Choose Insert a synth (Rapture if you like) When the dialog box comes up, make sure you check the box to include a midi track, and first out for the synth. The midi track should have Rapture as it out, and midi omni as in. Rapture's audio track should go to either a master with an out to your Fast Track, or directly to your Fast Track. If you do not have any outboard midi synths, do not choose any in prefs, especially not Wavetable. Noise? Brian

I talked to an audio guy out here...we think there is an issue with fast track itself. So I sent it back to Amazon. Probably going to order a cakewalk audio interface unless someone out there has a better idea for around the $150 to $200 mark that will work well with the M-audio Keystation ES I have.

When I play keys on my keyboard the lights light up next to the FX but no lights go up on the master slide. I suspect it's some routing troubles but the above indicates you are very nearly there. Sonar is receiving the MIDI data so........... - Make sure that on that MIDI track the output is set to the synth you want to use.
- Make sure there is a channel selected (in the drop down under the input)
- Make sure there is a patch selected (beneath that - if there is no choices leave it on the default)
- Make sure there is a bank selected (beside the channel selection drop down - ditto above if no choice)
- The volume/level fader is up
- The mute button isn't active. In fact check that you have no 'Solo' lights showing anywhere in the project.
Now go to the softsynths output track and make sure that..... - The input on that track is set to the synths MIDI track output.
- The output is set to your master buss (or directly to your main soundcard outs)
- The volume fader is up on that track
- The mute button is NOT active
If you selected 'Master buss' as your output above do the next steps if not jump to the end...... - Make sure that your Master buss output is set to you main outs on your souncard/interface
- Make sure the 'Mute' button is NOT active
- Make sure the fader is up
Lastly make sure that the volume on your main output is up and connected to speakers/headphones. All things being equal you should now hear something. If you don't go back to the synth selection and try selecting a simpler synth such as TTS-1 which you may have to insert via the synth rack first - making sure that the "Insert audio out track" option is selected in the properties when inserting it. Repeat the rest of the process and try again. Hope that fixes it for you.

I was just wondering. If the USB connection on the keyboard is just used for powering up the keyboard, did you configured the keyboard to do MIDI output? For example - I use a E-MU Xboard-61 and it is hooked up with a USB connection. It sends all its MIDI data trough this USB connection, and I have to explicitly configure the keyboard itself if I want to use the MIDI connection at the back.

If you're using the demo version I suspect that while you can insert a 3rd party softsynth it won't work. From memory previous demo versions have been tied to using the basic included synth to try things with. Read any instructions that come with the demo. If its not that I suggest you do tutorial number 4 which is all about inserting softsynths and getting them to work.
