BFD2 note names not visible in Piano Roll

OK, many of you may have guessed that I got my new copy of Sonar (well 8, then will buy upgrade to X1 asap) which means I have BFD2 up and running.

Here is an issue I had with BFD 1.5 also - I have a midi drum track, I assign BFD2 as a soft synth. I highlight the track and open piano roll and it gives me the Piano View down the left hand side.

I do not know HOW I have managed to do this in the past, but sometime when I've opened the Piano Roll it has fed in BFD drum names instead of the piano view .... like Kick 1, Open Hat, Closed, 1/4 Shank.

Does anyone know how to do this on Sonar 8 ?

it depends on whether BFD is mapped to GM drums or not (I don't have BFD myself).  most drum softsynhs are not (for whatever reasons that I cannot fathom).  if they're not mapped to GM drum notes then you have to use a drum map.  usually the users groups of each drum softsynth has a download of the drum map available.  if not you'll have to make one if you don't already have one on your old system.

if they ARE mapped to GM then all you have to do is right click on the piano keys in the PRV and choose GM Drums from the pull down menu.

I've seen the PRV with the names of the kit pieces down the side, but NOT as part of a drum map.

    Go figure.

It lacked all the usual functionality of a normal map (no Mute, Solo buttons - no way to examine the map properties of a kit piece etc) and the format of it was completely unlike the grey, spreadsheet like grid of a map - instead it was just a list of plain text on a white background but with kit pieces instead of note #'s where the "keys" usually are.

I haven't seen it since though.

OP - read up on using drum maps - how to insert one, create one, edit one etc.

I couldn't live without their use.
