That depends on what devices you are going to hook up.  If they have vendor developed ASIO drivers then you don't need it.  If you are trying to use your PC sound card then you might.

Now, my Presonus FireStudio just blowed up real good, and while it's in the shop, I fired up the Realtek and installed Asio4All. The A/D just doesn't sound as good, but I'm impressed. I have an old Mackie mixer plugged into the computer sound's line inputs, and an ART DMPAII optical digital in to the Realtek.

A few hickups aside, this setup is working well enough for me to keep working (even a paid video mix for layback, and it sounded great).

But yes, for better sound and more stable operation, by a good audio interface at some point.

I was forced to resort to ASIO4ALL to get the Conexant interface to work on my laptop. For real audio interfaces, ASIO4ALL is normally not necessary.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

What I wonder is why we need ASIO4ALL. It seems to me that the WDM setting should work, and indeed on my laptop it does produce sound. However, it makes continuous, repetitive "pops" (or maybe they are "clicks"). Yet by adding another software process (ASIO4ALL), which must be sucking up some CPU, I can get clean sounds.

I know that on my desktop computer, with a MOTU 828mk3, I had audio hickups until I turned off the built in wireless card. I'm pretty sure there must be some sort of similar interrupt causing the glitches when I use WDM on my laftop, but I haven't been able to find it. I've tried turning off a lot of things, but not everything yet.

Is there anyone on the forums with more of a computer audio design background that can explain this to me. I know a lot of you are familiar with what does and doesn't work through experience. I'd just like to understand why.

simply because the manufacturers of the onboard "soundcards" do not write consistent solid WDM drivers because that's another area they can cut costs.  it costs development money to create good drivers - most users of the onboard soundcards don't need good, efficient WDM drivers.  the percentage of people using WDM drivers for more than playing mp3's or youtube streaming on their computers is very very small.  and those who need efficient drivers usually buy aftermarket soundcards.

to the OP:  bitflipper has offered solid advice.  you only need ASIO4ALL if you can't get your onboard soundcard to work.  if you are using your onboard soundcard, it might work without ASIO4ALL.  if it doesn't, then install it and use it until you can afford to get a better soundcard.  If you're not using your onboard soundcard, then you likely will NOT need ASIO4ALL, but we'll need to know what soundcard you're using.

I do agree with the guys above that you should consider getting a better soundcard if you're using your onboard soundcard.  check my website for some soundcard recommendations.
